Cape May MAC Launches Online Auction to Boost Year-Round Cultural Programs

Starting Monday, February 2, Cape May MAC (Museums+Arts+Culture) is inviting supporters and residents alike to take part in a unique online auction aimed at sustaining its vital operations and programming. Running through 10:00 a.m. EST on March 2, 2026, the auction features a wide array of fun and one-of-a-kind items and experiences, all available for public bidding. This annual fundraiser plays a critical role in Cape May MAC’s financial health, with more than 90% of its budget coming from earned revenue through ticket sales, memberships, and donations. Proceeds from the auction directly support the nonprofit’s operations and the rich calendar of tours, events, and cultural experiences offered throughout the year. Cape May MAC is a major year-round presence in the region, employing over 200 full- and part-time staff. The organization operates key historic and cultural landmarks such as the Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May Lighthouse, and the WWII Lookout Tower. Its offerings also include trolley tours, private property tours, and numerous special events that draw visitors well beyond the summer months. These efforts contribute significantly to the local economy, generating more than $200 million in annual economic impact for Cape May. Notably, more than half of that impact occurs during the shoulder seasons, helping businesses stay afloat during traditionally slower times. By participating in the auction, bidders not only have the chance to take home something special—they also play an active role in preserving Cape May’s history, arts, and culture, while supporting its year-round vitality.
Preserved Victorian Estate in Wildwood Offers Rare Glimpse Into the Past

A storied piece of Wildwood history is now available for purchase. The J. Thompson Baker House — a grand coastal estate with deep political and local roots — has been listed for $1.75 million. Built in 1909 by Wildwood’s first mayor, J. Thompson Baker, the home originally stood directly on the boardwalk, overlooking the beach. Though the coastline has since expanded, pushing the home two blocks inland, it remains one of the city’s most iconic residences. The 4,700-square-foot estate includes eight bedrooms, three full bathrooms, and three half-baths, along with original stained glass windows, pocket doors, woodwork, and floors that echo its early 20th-century craftsmanship. The estate sits on a quarter-acre corner lot and offers a wide range of amenities: a three-sided wraparound porch with classical columns, a sunroom, a great room, a kitchen with commercial-grade appliances, and 10 off-street parking spots. A grand staircase leads to the second floor, where all eight bedrooms and most of the bathrooms are located. Though Wildwood has become known for its vibrant boardwalk, wide beaches, and modern Doo-Wop architecture, many of its older homes have been replaced by multi-family properties or vacation rentals. According to census data, 46% of the city’s housing is multi-family — significantly higher than nearby towns and the statewide average. This makes the Baker House not just a rare find, but a symbol of Wildwood’s architectural and civic legacy. Local historians and residents hope that any future owner appreciates the home’s historic value and maintains its unique character.
Beach Days, Big Bills: Jersey Shore Costs Surge Ahead of Summer 2026

As winter drags on, many New Jersey residents are already picturing their first trip to the shore. But this year, summer planning may come with a jolt of financial reality. Towns along the Jersey Shore—from Monmouth to Cape May—are quietly increasing costs and implementing new restrictions, making a once-affordable escape feel increasingly out of reach. One of the most noticeable changes is the sharp rise in beach badge prices. Seasonal tags, once a modest $20, are now approaching $40 in many towns. Daily passes in premium beach destinations are climbing toward $15 per person. Local governments point to inflation, expensive storm recovery efforts, and the struggle to recruit lifeguards as reasons for the hike. But for families, especially those traveling with children, just accessing the sand can now cost hundreds of dollars over the course of the summer. For generations, the Jersey Shore has been a symbol of affordable summer fun, especially for working-class families across the region. But as prices rise and regulations mount, that image is fading. What was once a budget-friendly getaway is starting to resemble a high-end destination—one increasingly reserved for those who can afford the added costs and complexities. As Memorial Day approaches, beachgoers will need to plan ahead—and budget carefully. In 2026, a trip “down the shore” isn’t just a tradition; it’s becoming a luxury.
