Cape May Police Department Promotes Four Officers at City Ceremony

The Cape May Police Department marked a significant moment Monday as four officers were elevated to higher ranks during a promotion ceremony attended by city leaders and department officials. Police Chief Dekon Fashaw, Mayor Zachary Mullock, and other city representatives gathered to recognize the officers’ achievements and continued service to the community. During the ceremony, Officer Joe Walker was promoted to the rank of captain. Scott Krissinger advanced to lieutenant, while John Mihal and Colt Gibson were both promoted to sergeant. City officials highlighted the importance of the officers’ dedication and leadership as they step into their new roles. The promotions reflect the department’s commitment to strengthening public safety and recognizing the experience and service of its officer.
Coyote Sightings Rise in Wildwood Crest as Mating Season Begins

Coyote sightings in Wildwood Crest and other parts of South Jersey may become more common in the coming weeks as the animals enter their late-winter mating season, according to wildlife officials. A recent sighting along the Wildwood Crest bike path sparked conversation among residents online, but experts say this type of activity is normal and does not indicate an unusual increase in the local population. Coyotes have lived throughout South Jersey for many years, including in coastal communities and barrier island towns. During mating season, which typically runs from late winter into early spring, coyotes travel more frequently as they search for mates and establish territories. This added movement often makes them more visible, especially in quieter shore towns before the busy summer season begins. Wildlife experts emphasize that coyotes generally avoid people and rarely pose a threat. Residents who see one are advised to keep their distance and never approach or feed the animal. Basic precautions such as keeping pets leashed, securing garbage, and removing outdoor food sources can help prevent coyotes from being attracted to residential areas. Officials say encounters that lead to safety concerns are uncommon. However, if a coyote repeatedly enters a yard or shows aggressive behavior toward pets, residents should report the situation to local animal control. Overall, experts say occasional sightings are simply part of living alongside wildlife in South Jersey and can be managed safely with awareness and common-sense precautions.
