Cape May to Salute America's Heroes at Veterans Day Ceremony November 11

The City of Cape May will pause to honor the courage, sacrifice and dedication of America's military veterans during a special Veterans Day ceremony on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at Soldiers and Sailors Park.

The annual observance will begin at 11 a.m. at the park, located at the intersection of Columbia Avenue and Gurney Street, and is scheduled to continue until noon.

Residents, visitors, veterans and military families are invited to gather in recognition of the men and women who have worn the uniform of the United States Armed Forces, as well as those who continue to serve today.

Veterans Day provides an opportunity for Americans to reflect on the extraordinary sacrifices made by generations of service members in defense of the nation's freedoms. From those who served during wartime to those who answered the call during peacetime, the observance recognizes the commitment and service of military personnel from every branch of the armed forces.

The Cape May ceremony will offer the community an opportunity to express its appreciation for those who have served while remembering the lasting contributions of veterans and their families.

As part of the Veterans Day observance, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry is offering complimentary transportation to veterans and active-duty military personnel on November 11.

Eligible military members may travel free as foot passengers or vehicle passengers. Additional benefits include a complimentary cup of coffee or fountain soda and an 11% discount on onboard food and retail purchases.

Veterans and active-duty personnel should have a valid military identification card or a driver's license displaying their veteran status to take advantage of the offers.

Veterans Day is more than a date on the calendar. It serves as a reminder that the freedoms Americans enjoy have been protected through the service, dedication and sacrifices of generations of military personnel.

The City of Cape May encourages the community to attend the November 11 ceremony and take time to recognize those who have answered their country's call.

Crafts, Conversation and Community: New Women's Group Takes Shape in Cape May

Historic Cold Spring Village in Cape May is introducing The Heritage Circle, a new community gathering designed to bring local women together through traditional handcrafts, friendship and a shared appreciation for history.

The group's inaugural gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 1 p.m. at the Historic Cold Spring Village Welcome Center, located at 720 Route 9 South in Cape May.

Inspired by the sewing and social circles of the 19th century, the program provides a relaxed and welcoming environment where women can connect, exchange ideas, work on creative projects and enjoy meaningful conversation. Participants are encouraged to bring knitting, embroidery, hexies, mending or other small handcraft projects, although no crafting experience or project is required.

More than simply a crafting group, the Heritage Circle aims to strengthen community connections, encourage new friendships and preserve the traditions that were once an important part of everyday life. The initiative also supports Historic Cold Spring Village's mission of celebrating and interpreting the cultural heritage of southern New Jersey.

Gatherings take place at the Historic Cold Spring Village Welcome Center, located at 720 Route 9 South in Cape May. Women of all skill levels and interests are welcome, including those who simply want to socialize or learn more about traditional arts.

Halloween Fireballs Return: Southern Taurids Meteor Shower Peaks November 4–5

South Jersey residents could be treated to a spectacular celestial display this week as the Southern Taurids meteor shower reaches its anticipated fireball peak overnight Wednesday, November 4, into Thursday, November 5, 2026. Known for producing unusually bright, slow-moving meteors often referred to as Halloween Fireballs, the shower could send brilliant streaks of light across the night sky, some bright enough to outshine the planet Venus.

The Southern Taurids originate from debris left behind by Comet 2P/Encke and remain active from September 20 through November 20. Although the shower typically produces only about five to ten meteors per hour under favorable conditions, it is particularly famous for its occasional dazzling fireballs that can illuminate large portions of the sky.

This year's viewing conditions look promising, thanks to a waning crescent Moon that should create relatively little interference from moonlight. Residents of Cape May County and surrounding South Jersey communities may have especially good viewing opportunities in darker coastal and rural areas, including Cape May Point, Stone Harbor, Avalon and portions of western Cape May County.

For the best chance of catching a fireball, skywatchers should head outside during the late evening or overnight hours, find a safe location away from bright lights and allow their eyes about 20 to 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness. No telescope or special equipment is needed, just clear skies, warm clothing and a little patience.

While the brightest fireballs are never guaranteed, the Southern Taurids offer a unique opportunity to witness one of autumn's most fascinating natural light shows. And for anyone who misses the November 4–5 peak, meteor activity will continue throughout much of November as the Southern and Northern Taurid showers overlap.
