Jazz@ThePoint Spotlights Student Talent with Bob Simon Scholarship Awards

The South Jersey Jazz Society (SJJS) awarded its prestigious Bob Simon Jazz Scholarship to Mainland Regional High School senior Theo Rowe in recognition of his exceptional saxophone talent. The scholarship was presented during the Jazz@ThePoint Festival on October 18, just before the headline performance by jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli.

This year marked the first time that SJJS honored three students with scholarships. In addition to Rowe, Deptford High School students Faith Sandig, a senior pianist, and Thomas Klotz, a sophomore drummer, also received awards. Each student will receive a financial grant to support their continued musical education.

The scholarship program is named after Bob Simon, a late Northfield resident known for his support of the arts throughout South Jersey. The annual award is open to middle and high school students in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Ocean counties who demonstrate outstanding skill and dedication to jazz performance, whether instrumental or vocal.

Applicants are required to submit a personal letter outlining their goals and intended use of the scholarship, a recommendation from their school’s band director, and a performance sample showcasing their jazz abilities.

The scholarship program aligns with the South Jersey Jazz Society’s mission to promote jazz education and appreciation in the region. Since its founding in 2004, SJJS has donated over $30,000 to support school music programs and regularly hosts concerts, jazz series, and educational initiatives.

Historic Synagogue in Wildwood Receives State and National Recognition

Beth Judah Temple, a cornerstone of Jewish heritage in Cape May County since 1915, has officially been added to both the National Register of Historic Places and the New Jersey Register of Historic Places. The recognition marks a major milestone for the historic synagogue, located at 3912 Pacific Avenue. City officials have welcomed the designation, noting its broader impact on preserving Wildwood’s diverse history. The recognition also opens the door to eligibility for preservation grants, which could help maintain and restore the historic structure. Despite its new historic status, the synagogue remains active. Under the leadership of Co-Chair Ruth Edelman, Beth Judah continues to host worship services, speakers, exhibits, and community events. The temple’s leadership sees the recognition as both an honor and an opportunity to strengthen its role as a living part of the region’s cultural fabric.

Cape May Airport Future Unclear Amid Housing Plans and $32M Reimbursement

Cape May County is exploring a plan to take over operations of the Cape May County Airport, ending its 25-year partnership with the Delaware River and Bay Authority. The transition could cost taxpayers up to $32 million in reimbursements for unamortized investments. At the center of the plan is a 300-unit mixed-income housing development on 35 acres of airport land. Commissioner Will Morey, previously sidelined in talks, supports a smaller development and questions whether the DRBA must be removed to proceed. Public concern has grown over the lack of transparency, with FAA approval and further costs still uncertain.
