Basement Fire in Cape May Believed to Be Sparked by Scooter Charging

Emergency crews were dispatched around 2:22 p.m. to a home on the 100 block of Broadway after a fire alarm was triggered. Upon arrival, responders found smoke rising from the basement and escalated the situation to a First Alarm Structure Fire. The fire was extinguished swiftly, and no injuries or displacements were reported. Investigators suspect the blaze began with an electric scooter that was plugged in and charging at the time. The Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office continues to examine the scene to determine the exact cause.

State Lawmakers Grapple with 20% Electricity Bill Hike Ahead of June Increase

New Jersey lawmakers held a six-hour joint hearing to investigate the sharp rise in electricity costs, which are set to increase by up to 20% starting June 1. A consensus emerged that the state needs more electricity generation, as demand has outpaced supply. Lawmakers and energy officials debated the causes, including delays in connecting new energy sources to the grid, aging infrastructure, and rising demand from data centers. Political divisions emerged over the state’s transition to renewable energy, with Republicans blaming policy decisions and Democrats criticizing grid operator PJM. Immediate solutions discussed included expanding battery storage, improving forecasting, and promoting energy efficiency. A second hearing is planned to gather input from utility companies.
