From History to Habitat: Revolution Rail Offers a Unique Ride Through Cape May
Hidden in plain sight in the heart of Cape May is the adventure you didn’t know you were looking for, Revolution Rail.
Revolution Rail, a one-of-a-kind outdoor attraction in Cape May, has quietly become a staple of the region’s tourism scene. Since its debut in late 2020 and full launch in 2021, the rail biking tour company has hosted nearly 100,000 riders and continues to grow in popularity as it enters its fifth season.
Departing from the Cape May Welcome Center, the 90-minute guided tour takes riders on a four-mile round-trip journey along historic train tracks leading to the Cape May Canal. Participants pedal custom-made rail bikes two miles out to the canal, where guides offer insights into local history, including World War II-era stories and the origins of the canal itself. The return trip includes a stop at the Garrett Family Preserve, where trained naturalists lead a short nature walk through the area’s rich habitats.

Last Minute Instructions from Savannah
Managed by Jake Cuomo, the experience blends fitness, education, and eco-tourism. “It’s more than just a bike ride,” says Cuomo. “It’s a curated immersion into Cape May’s unique natural and historical landscape. Tours run with at least one guide and can accommodate up to 44 participants. During peak season, rides are offered every two hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday through Sunday.”
Guests are encouraged to bring snacks or even picnic supplies, as there are stops along the route with picnic tables. Some visitors even enjoy beverages—though moderation is emphasized to ensure safety.
In addition to standard rides, Revolution Rail in Cape May hosts themed events. Notable among them are full moon rides, complete with storytelling, s’mores by a bonfire, and local pirates. Cuomo added, “We even have a few tales about the famous Jersey Devil!” Family-friendly events, like an Easter egg hunt tour, have also been popular.
The rail bikes are designed to be accessible to nearly everyone. Infants can ride in carriers, and individuals up to 96 years old have enjoyed the experience. The only real restriction is a 300-pound weight limit per seat, a safety measure to protect the equipment.
Operating from mid-March through mid-December, evolution Rail offers a compelling alternative to traditional Cape May activities, making it an ideal option for days when the beach isn't on the itinerary. With no other operation like it in New Jersey, it stands out as a truly unique way to discover the region.
