From Sanctuary to Stage: Cape May’s Historic AME Church Reopens as Theater

Cape May’s historic Allen AME Church has been transformed into the Clemans Theater, a black-box performance venue operated by the East Lynne Theater Company. After decades of decline and a fire in 2018, the church was sold to the city and renovated for $1.2 million. Original elements like stained glass and the steeple were preserved. The theater is part of a growing cultural district celebrating the city’s Black history. Renovations will continue to enable larger productions. The first show opens July 31.

Combat-Tested Harrier Jet Joins NAS Wildwood’s Historic Collection

The Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum is set to receive an AV-8B Harrier II+ jet, a combat veteran aircraft from the U.S. Marine Corps. Scheduled to arrive June 4, the Harrier will be on display in the museum’s historic Hangar #1. The jet flew 219 combat missions and was part of the famed VMA-223 “Bulldogs” squadron. The museum continues to honor military aviation history at its Cape May location, where Corsair pilots once trained during World War II. The NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum, located at Cape May Airport, continues to honor its World War II legacy, including the 42 aviators who lost their lives while training there. Visitors can view the Harrier alongside other historic aircraft, with special exhibits like the Longest Yarn Traveling D-Day Exhibit included with admission through Labor Day. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Study Finds No Dust Mites in NJ Boardwalk Plushies, But Warns of Other Allergens

A study by Shore News Network’s forensic lab found no dust mites in a plush toy from a New Jersey boardwalk claw machine, though dust particles, human skin flakes, and a hair were detected. While this offers some relief, experts caution that allergens present in the toys could still pose minor health risks. Health professionals recommend regularly washing plush toys or using a hot dryer cycle to eliminate dust and allergens. The lab plans a follow-up study in summer to investigate conditions when dust mites are more active.
