Drought Warning Lifted Across New Jersey, Watch Remains for Coastal South

New Jersey has lifted its drought warning statewide following months of improved rainfall, though the Coastal South region will remain under a drought watch due to slower aquifer recovery. The area experienced rainfall deficits of 7 to 10 inches last year, and its porous aquifers require a substantial amount of precipitation to fully recharge. As such, the watch status will remain in place to promote ongoing water conservation. The Coastal South region includes all of Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland counties, along with parts of Camden, Gloucester, Salem, Burlington, and Ocean counties. The DEP continues to monitor key drought indicators—such as rainfall, streamflow, reservoir storage, and water demand—and will provide updates as needed. Local municipalities and utilities may still implement additional water restrictions based on their specific supply conditions. Visit dep.nj.gov/drought for more information.
Cape May Emerges as a Top Whale Watching Destination on the East Coast

The United States is well known for its iconic land animals—majestic bison, powerful grizzly bears, and the unmistakable bald eagle. But for those willing to look just beyond the coastline, some of the most captivating wildlife experiences await offshore. From Alaska’s rugged waters to Virginia’s Atlantic edge, an incredible array of whale species roams the ocean, offering thrilling opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts and casual travelers alike. One of the country’s hidden gems for whale watching is Cape May, New Jersey according to Conde Nast Traveler. This charming peninsula at the southernmost point of the state is not only a birdwatcher’s paradise, but also a hotspot for marine life sightings. From March through December, visitors can board the Cape May Whale Watcher for the “Cetacean Spectacular,” a three-hour cruise into the Delaware Bay. The journey promises sightings of marine mammals—or offers a free return trip if none appear. Common sightings include humpback and fin whales, bottlenose dolphins, and a variety of bird species, including ospreys and bald eagles.

Authorities closed Route 47 for approximately four hours while investigating the crash. The cause remains undetermined, and the investigation is being led by Middle Township Police’s Major Crimes and Accident Crash Units.
