A Cape May Toy Shop That’s Stuffed With Love and Memories

Tucked inside the Escalator Mall at the heart of Cape May’s Washington Street Mall is a colorful little wonderland where childhood memories come to life. Owned by husband-and-wife team, Vince & Allison Stewart since 2003, this cozy toy shop has grown into a beloved fixture in the community, specializing in plush toys, licensed characters, and everything irresistibly cute — or “kawaii,” as the Japanese call it.

Despite its small size, the shop is bursting with inventory, filling nearly every inch with color, texture, and whimsy. The walls are packed with licensed characters like Hello Kitty and Marvel heroes, while ceiling displays overflow with vibrant plush Pokémon and novelty items. The shop’s most popular items lately include Sunny Angels and Smiskis — quirky collectibles that glow in the dark and come hidden in blind boxes, adding a fun element of surprise. Slime has also become a top seller, particularly the whimsically packaged kawaii slime.

Though it leans heavily into the cute and cuddly, this is more than just a retail stop — it's an immersive experience designed to delight the senses. Fun music plays overhead, inviting scents fill the air, and the entire space is visually overwhelming in the best way. It’s this unique approach that has helped the shop become a tradition for generations of families visiting Cape May.

This plush made it into a school picture

Open nearly every day of the year — including Thanksgiving — the store has become a dependable retreat for parents looking to entertain children during holidays and school breaks. Its owners take pride in creating a welcoming space where kids can explore and discover. Many families return year after year, often sharing stories about their children’s cherished toys purchased from the store. Some visitors have even returned decades later, now bringing their own children in tow.

The shop has a loyal customer base and a strong online presence through its website, ZooCompanyToys.com. Most of the store’s inventory is available for shipping, often packaged with handwritten notes and extra goodies to brighten a customer's day. Despite what the polished website might suggest, the operation is intimate and run by a small, close-knit team.

With a focus on thoughtful customer service and deep product knowledge, the staff sets this store apart from the big-box alternatives. Whether it’s helping a child find their new favorite plush or packaging up a well-loved toy for shipping, everything is done with care and a touch of magic.

From Ruin to Refuge: Cape May Meadows Welcomes Back Nesting Birds

Cape May Meadows in Cape May Point has been transformed from a failing wetlands ecosystem into a thriving habitat for migratory birds, thanks to efforts by The Nature Conservancy and the Army Corps of Engineers. Restoration began in 2004, tackling invasive phragmites, rebuilding dunes, restoring freshwater flow, and constructing water control systems. New sand islands now provide safe nesting areas for endangered birds like the least tern. Despite rising seas and stronger storms, over 100 birds have already begun nesting in the protected habitat.
