Drones Join Lifeguards in Keeping Swimmers Safe Along the Shore

Ocean City Police Department’s drone unit demonstrated its new life-saving capabilities during a training exercise with Beach Patrol on June 11. A drone successfully deployed inflatable flotation devices to a simulated drowning victim, showcasing how the technology can assist in rescue efforts, especially after hours. The department operates a fleet of four drones, primarily used for search and rescue, tactical response, and crime scene documentation. Officials highlighted growing interagency collaboration, emphasized responsible drone usage, and reminded the public that drones are an aid—not a replacement—for traditional safety measures.

Cape May, Wildwood, and More: South Jersey Beaches Rule This Year’s Rankings

South Jersey beaches dominated USA TODAY’s 2025 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards for New Jersey, with The Wildwoods taking first place. Ocean City earned the second spot, followed closely by Atlantic City in third. Cape May and Sea Isle City rounded out the top five, completing an all-South Jersey front-runner lineup. This marks the first time in recent memory that the top five positions have been claimed entirely by South Jersey destinations. Only two northern beaches, Long Beach Island and Asbury Park, made the top ten. The rankings highlight South Jersey’s broad appeal and strong voter support heading into the summer season.

NJ Seniors May Soon Get Automatic Jury Duty Exemption Under New Bill

A new bill under consideration in New Jersey would grant residents aged 70 and older an automatic exemption from jury duty. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize jury service in the state. New Jersey courts have already made strides by implementing electronic communication options and more flexible scheduling. The automatic age-based exemption would align New Jersey with several other states that have adopted similar policies. The legislation aims to reduce the burden of jury service on seniors and streamline court operations. Older individuals who still wish to serve may do so voluntarily.
