Cape May Police are on Duty

Six individuals from the Washington, D.C., and Maryland regions have been arrested.  The multi-agency investigation began on May 5, 2024, when Cape May Police officers responded to a burglary in progress at the Queen May Jewelry Store on the Washington Street Mall. The suspects face federal charges linked to organized retail theft. Authorities credit extensive collaboration between law enforcement agencies across several states for the successful outcome and continue to seek public assistance in ongoing efforts to combat retail crime.

In an unrelated investigation, Cape May police are asking for the public’s help to identify a man seen in surveillance photos. Authorities believe he may have information connected to multiple recent incidents in the area. While no charges have been filed, police urge anyone with details to contact them. Information can be submitted by calling 609-884-9500 or by emailing [email protected]. Police assure the public that all tips can remain anonymous.

Rebuilt and Reopened: Grassy Sound Pier Welcomes Back Fishermen After 3-Year Closure

The Grassy Sound fishing pier has reopened after a three-year closure, following a $3.3 million reconstruction project. Once an aging timber bridge, the pier is now a modern, steel-supported fishing destination featuring fish-cleaning stations, water service, and recycling facilities. For residents who frequent Grassy Sound, the pier is more than just a place to fish. It represents a deeply rooted coastal tradition and a hub for multi-generational bonding. Many say its absence during the closure left a noticeable gap in their routines. The pier’s reopening has been widely celebrated, not only for restoring access to prime fishing waters—home to flounder, stripers, sheepshead, bluefish, crabs, and even small sharks—but also for preserving a space where memories are made. Adjacent to the pier, local businesses like the  Lazy Bass Bayside Bar & Grill are poised to benefit from renewed foot traffic, reinforcing the pier’s role as both a recreational and economic asset.

Explore the Wreck of the SS Atlantus: New Jersey's Historic Concrete Ship

The SS Atlantus in Better Days

The SS Atlantus, a World War I-era concrete ship, lies off the coast of Sunset Beach in Cape May, New Jersey. Built to address a steel shortage, the ship was later retired and repurposed for a ferry dock. Unfortunately, just a few months after its arrival, a storm struck, breaking the ship free from its moorings. It drifted 150 feet offshore, running aground. Efforts to salvage the vessel failed, and over the years, it has become a permanent fixture of the coastline. Once a major attraction, the SS Atlantus even served as a floating billboard for a time. Today, much of the ship is submerged, with only the stern visible most of the time. However, at low tide, visitors can catch a glimpse of the bow as well. The wreckage, divided into three parts, continues to intrigue beachgoers who may not know its full history.
