Once Rare, Eastern Bluebirds Now Flourish in Cape May

Eastern Bluebirds are making a strong comeback in Cape May County, thanks to conservation efforts and community engagement through nest box programs. Once rare due to habitat loss and competition from invasive species, the birds now number around 23 million. Locals are spotting more of them, especially in Dennis Township, and the Cape May Bird Observatory offers regular field trips where sightings are common. Bluebird coloration, interestingly, is structural rather than pigment-based. For those interested in joining local efforts or learning more about Eastern Bluebirds, resources are available at birdcapemay.org and nabluebirdsociety.org.

Wildwood Launches Action-Packed Summer Camp for Future First Responders

Wildwood's Fire Department is now accepting registrations for its free Summer Cadet Program, open to kids aged 10 to 17. Set to run the week of August 4th, the program invites youth to step into the boots of a firefighter and experience what it takes to respond to emergencies. Participants will learn how to operate firefighting equipment, develop life-saving skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the responsibilities and teamwork involved in emergency services. The cadet camp goes beyond a typical summer activity. It encourages confidence, leadership, and personal growth while giving participants a glimpse into a potential future career in public safety. The program blends real-world challenges with excitement, offering water-based exercises and action-packed training sessions. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

Tourism Boom: Cape May Among Top U.S. Counties for Travel in 2024

Cape May County has been named one of the top tourism destinations in the U.S. by Travel and Tour World, thanks to its high visitor numbers, strong economic impact, and broad appeal. The county enjoyed over 12 million visitors in 2024 and $8.1 billion in spending. Beyond tourism, the county maintains strong ties to its fishing and agricultural roots. The port of Cape May-Wildwood ranks as New Jersey’s largest commercial fishing hub and the second largest on the East Coast. Meanwhile, the county’s farms not only bolster the food scene but also support a growing network of local wineries, breweries, and distilleries. The recognition highlights a nationwide trend toward county-based tourism over big-city travel.
