Gretta the Zebra Passes Away After Recent Birth at Cape May Zoo

The Cape May County Zoo is grieving the loss of Gretta, a cherished member of its zebra herd who passed away following a tragic accident earlier this month. Gretta had recently been in the spotlight after giving birth to a foal with her mate, Ziggy. Zoo officials are now focused on ensuring the young zebra receives the proper care and attention in the wake of her mother's passing. However, on July 9, Gretta was seen running across the exhibit with the rest of the herd. During the sprint, she turned and kicked her hind legs into the air—an instinctive zebra behavior—but fell to the ground after landing and was unable to rise. Zoo staff responded within minutes, and veterinarians provided care throughout the afternoon and evening. Despite their efforts, Gretta later passed away. A necropsy revealed she had broken multiple vertebrae during the fall, resulting in full paralysis below the injury point. Cape May County officials expressed their sorrow, recognizing Gretta’s impact on visitors and praising the staff for their compassionate response.
New Jersey Joins Multi-State Effort to Overhaul PJM Energy Grid Oversight

New Jersey and eight other states are urging PJM Interconnection to implement board-level reforms, citing rising energy costs and grid reliability concerns. The governors want greater state influence in leadership decisions and have formed a coalition to push for transparency and accountability in PJM’s operations. With current leadership changes underway at PJM, the states see an opportunity to reshape how the grid operator serves its member regions. To address these issues, the governors proposed a bipartisan list of board candidates and are calling on PJM to allocate two board seats for individuals selected jointly by the participating states. Although final board appointments lie with PJM’s membership, the governors believe their involvement would enhance transparency and ensure better alignment with public interests. Stay tuned.
