$1.3M Grant Expands Mental Health Courts in Atlantic and Cape May Counties

Atlantic and Cape May counties have received $1.3 million to expand their mental health court programs. These diversion initiatives provide treatment-based alternatives to incarceration for eligible individuals with serious mental illness who face felony charges. The new funding will support treatment, evaluations, and case management, with a focus on reducing repeat offenses and improving public safety through a rehabilitative approach.
Wanamaker House: Cape May Point’s Resilient Victorian Treasure

The Wanamaker House in Cape May Point is a historic 1875 Italianate-style villa originally built by department store pioneer John Wanamaker. One of the few surviving structures from the community’s early days as Sea Grove, the house has been moved twice to escape coastal erosion. The house has remained in service to religious organizations. In 1962, following a devastating Nor’easter, it was acquired by the Marianist Society, which still operates the site as the Marianist Family Retreat Center. Though the central cupola was lost to the storm and never rebuilt, the building has been respectfully updated to serve its spiritual mission. Safety enhancements, including a sprinkler system and elevator, were added without compromising the home’s historic interior features like its elegant staircase, plaster moldings, and original woodwork. The Wanamaker House is more than a preserved relic—it’s a symbol of Cape May Point’s founding vision: a peaceful, moral, and reflective coastal retreat. Thanks to the stewardship of those who have cared for it, it continues to inspire all who visit.
