A Celestial Double Feature: Sturgeon Moon and Perseid Meteors Light Up the Sky

Stargazers are in for a celestial treat this weekend as two awe-inspiring events light up the night sky: the Full Sturgeon Moon and the annual Perseid meteor shower. Together, they promise a dazzling double feature for skywatchers across the Northern Hemisphere. The Full Sturgeon Moon will reach its brightest point at 3:55 a.m. Eastern Time on August 9. While not technically a supermoon, this moon will appear slightly larger and more luminous than average, thanks to its closer-than-usual proximity to Earth. Adding to the spectacle, the Perseid meteor shower is currently active and expected to peak on August 12. This annual shower, one of the most anticipated of the year, can produce anywhere from 50 to 100 meteors per hour at its height. While the bright light of the full moon may wash out some of the fainter meteors, early risers and night owls may still catch a few shooting stars this weekend.

Hazardous Surf Conditions Hit Jersey Shore Ahead of Busy Summer Weekend

Beachgoers heading to the Jersey Shore this week are being urged to stay alert, as the National Weather Service has issued a high rip current risk for both today and Friday. Strong ocean swells combined with persistent east winds are creating hazardous swimming conditions along the coast. Rip currents—fast-moving channels of water that can pull swimmers away from shore—are a significant danger, especially when conditions intensify. The elevated risk means even experienced swimmers should think twice before venturing into the ocean. Officials are advising visitors to follow all posted warnings and listen to lifeguards. If swimming is permitted, beachgoers should stay in designated areas under lifeguard supervision and avoid venturing into deeper water.

Lawsuit Alleges Wildwood Crest Failed to Prevent Fatal Rip Current Drowning

The family of a South Jersey man who tragically drowned off the coast of Wildwood Crest in 2023 is now pursuing legal action against the borough and its beach patrol. The lawsuit, filed in Cape May County Superior Court, accuses the municipality and its lifeguard operations of negligence. Joseph Volm, a former standout athlete at Paul VI High School, lost his life in August 2023 after being pulled into the ocean by a powerful rip current. His family contends that inadequate safety measures and insufficient warnings contributed to the fatal incident. The suit argues that despite known hazardous conditions, proper protocols were not in place to prevent swimmers from entering the water or to quickly respond to emergencies.
