Celebrating 50 Years: Family-Owned Beachcomber Camping Resort Stands Strong in Cape May

Tucked away just minutes from the Jersey Shore, is celebrating a major milestone this year—its 50th season in operation. Established in the mid-1970s on the grounds of a former gravel pit, the 100-acre family-owned campground has been welcoming visitors with a uniquely personal touch that corporate-run campgrounds can’t quite replicate.
The site is owned and operated by Tammy and Ken Gomez, along with their children Mary and Mark. Located at 462 Seashore rd. in Cape May, Beachcomber remains one of the few privately run camping resorts in the Cape May region. Over the past five decades, it has grown into one of the largest camping resorts in the Northeast serving both seasonal and transient campers alike. The campground includes unique rental accommodations like teepees, tiny houses, and park models.
The layout of the resort—with its organized grid-like structure—was designed to mimic a traditional neighborhood, making it easier for large RVs and trailers to navigate. Visitors can enjoy two stocked fishing lakes, a swimming lake with kayaking, and a wide range of family-friendly activities from hayrides and bingo nights to pool parties and dances.
Beachcomber thrives on community spirit. The Gomez family has long prioritized giving back, organizing fundraising events for causes such as Cape Regional Medical Center, the local animal shelter, Cape Hope, Toys for Tots, and Wildwood Catholic Academy. One standout tradition is their annual car show in honor of Tammy’s father, a classic car enthusiast, which features live music, food, and draws both campers and Cape May locals. New this year is the first ever BeachCon Comicon being held at the campground on the 31st of this month. (More to follow on this event)
Like many campgrounds, Beachcomber experienced a boom during the COVID-19 pandemic as camping became one of the few safe travel options. While business has since leveled off, the resort remains busy, though it continues to feel the absence of Canadian campers—once a reliable part of their seasonal community. Political tensions caused a wave of cancellations earlier this year, but bookings from the north have recently begun to trickle back in.
Guests and locals alike often remark on the resort’s peaceful environment, where campfires crackle, kids fish with bits of hot dogs and bread, and longtime staff remember visitors by name. The campground operates from mid-April to November 1st—longer than many nearby sites—and is pet-friendly, welcoming guests of the two- and four-legged variety.
Beyond its amenities, Beachcomber takes pride in being a genuine part of the community. Some staff members camp on-site, ensuring quick responses to any issues, and security is present to maintain the campground's privacy and safety.
Despite rumors of a sale. the Gomez family confirms they have no plans to sell. They remain committed to their family-run approach, offering a welcoming retreat for campers and locals alike. Even as Cape May continues to change, Beachcomber remains a local fixture, rich with history, heart, and hospitality.

Everyone knows Cape May, is a well-known stopover location for migrating Monarch butterflies during their fall migration to Mexico. The migration typically takes place from late September through mid-October. Monarchs use Cape May as a place to rest and refuel before continuing their journey. Now, Cape May’s butterfly watchers can join a cutting-edge conservation effort by helping track Monarch butterflies using a smartphone app. Developed by Cellular Tracking Technologies and Cape May Point Science Center, the solar-powered, rice-sized tags allow anyone with the app to detect and report Monarch movements. The app shows live tracks, nearby butterflies, and a leaderboard, with versions available on iOS, Android, and desktop.
New Jersey’s Plastic Bag Ban Faces Growing Backlash and Political Pressure

New Jersey’s plastic bag ban, in effect since 2022, is under renewed scrutiny. Critics say it’s inconvenient, costly, and has unintentionally increased plastic use as reusable bags are often discarded after one use. Public opinion polls show growing support for rolling back or eliminating the law, with critics calling for greater consumer choice and flexibility. Support for repeal is growing, and Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli has vowed to end the ban if elected. Any legislative repeal would require approval from both houses and the governor.
