$300K Donation to Aid Retired Police and Military Dogs

Hurricane’s Heroes a nonprofit founded in 2019 by former Secret Service agent Marshall Mirarchi and his wife, Lisa, donated $300,000 to Paws of Honor to fund medical care for 167 retired police and military dogs. Founded in 2019 in honor of a former Secret Service dog, the nonprofit raises money nationwide and through an annual event in Sea Isle City. Advances in veterinary care have extended the lifespans of police and military dogs, but longer lives often come with more expensive treatments. Some require tens of thousands of dollars in surgeries or therapies. Paws of Honor and Hurricane’s Heroes work together to ease that financial burden for handlers.

Close Call Spurs Ocean City’s Mayor to Launch E-Bike Safety Campaign

A close call with two young e-bike riders has spurred Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian to take immediate action on safety. Gillian said the pair, riding on the wrong side of the road, sped through a red light directly into the path of his vehicle. The near collision, which ended without injury, left the mayor deeply shaken and determined to address what he described as a growing problem in the city and across New Jersey. The concern follows a series of recent e-bike crashes in New Jersey, including incidents in Montvale, Somers Point, and Gloucester Township. Some involved high speeds, collisions with vehicles, and in one case, the death of a 14-year-old rider. Gillian emphasized that e-bikes can be significantly faster and more powerful than traditional bicycles, posing real danger when not handled safely. In response, the Ocean City school district will introduce e-bike safety education to students. Fourth graders will hear from the Community-Oriented Policing unit during orientation later this month, and all students will attend a safety presentation once school starts. Gillian has also contacted the governor’s office to discuss updating state laws on e-bike use. County officials plan to address the topic at an upcoming annual meeting of local mayors.

Fishing Just Got Cheaper in NJ Thanks to Expanded Buddy License Rules

Good News for fishermen. New Jersey has revised its Buddy Fishing License Program to expand eligibility and increase discounts. Under the program, eligible “Buddy Teams” — either one returning angler and one new angler, or two new anglers — receive steep discounts when purchasing licenses together in the same transaction. The deal applies to residents and non-residents aged 16 and older who aren’t already eligible for other license discounts. Savings include resident licenses reduced from $22.50 to $11.75, non-resident licenses cut from $34.00 to $17.50, and all-around licenses lowered from $72.25 to $62.25. Licenses can be bought online or in person, with both anglers’ profiles and certifications completed beforehand.
