Proposed Budget Could Shrink Jersey Shore Replenishment Funds by 70%

A funding fight is brewing in Congress over the future of Jersey Shore beach replenishment projects, with two New Jersey House members at odds over the issue. A Republican-led appropriations proposal would reduce U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ beach replenishment funding from the usual $200 million to just $60 million in the upcoming fiscal year, beginning October 1. The cuts could stall planned projects in towns like Avalon, Beach Haven, and Stone Harbor. Democratic Rep. Frank Pallone warns the reduction would leave coastal towns financially stranded, as they rely on substantial federal assistance to meet strict project requirements and prove cost-effectiveness. Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew, whose district includes much of South Jersey’s coastline, insists he is committed to securing the funds. He plans to meet with local mayors on August 26 to discuss strategies.

Tropical Storm Erin Forms in Atlantic, Could Become Season’s First Hurricane

Tropical Storm Erin formed west of the Cabo Verde Islands late Monday morning and is forecast to intensify into the season’s first hurricane. The storm formed just west of the Cabo Verde Islands, off the coast of Africa, and is expected to intensify steadily over the next several days. Forecasts from both AccuWeather and the National Hurricane Center indicate Erin could reach Category 1 hurricane strength by Thursday. Some models suggest it may even grow into a major Category 3 hurricane, with sustained winds exceeding 111 mph. Meteorologists are tracking its path to assess potential land impacts.

Passersby Save Driver, But Wife and Dogs Lost in Woodbine Crash

A tragic accident on County Road 611 claimed the life of a woman and two dogs, despite the swift and selfless actions of passersby who managed to save the driver from his burning vehicle. The crash occurred on Tuesday, Aug. 5, around 4:14 p.m., when a southbound Subaru driven by 77-year-old Walter Chattin of Villas left the roadway and struck a utility pole, overturning onto its driver’s side. Inside the vehicle with him were his wife, 70-year-old Dianna Chattin, and their two dogs. Walter Chattin was transported to Cooper University Hospital with burns, broken legs, and other injuries. Authorities confirmed that Dianna Chattin died from injuries sustained in the crash. The New Jersey State Police continue to investigate the incident.
