Property Tax Relief Notices Headed to NJ Mailboxes August 13

New Jersey residents may soon find important mail in their inboxes as the state begins sending confirmation letters for the 2025 Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters (ANCHOR) tax benefit program. Starting August 13, eligible homeowners and renters will receive details about their benefit amount and filing instructions. Most residents under age 65 who are not receiving Social Security disability benefits will have their applications automatically filed by the state. Eligible renters and homeowners could receive $450 to $1,500, with seniors getting an extra $250. Most applications will be filed automatically, and the filing deadline is October 31. In 2024, more than $2 billion in ANCHOR benefits were distributed to roughly 2 million people statewide.

From Edison to Netflix: New Jersey Reclaims Its Movie-Making Legacy

New Jersey is experiencing a major film industry resurgence, reclaiming its historic role as the birthplace of American cinema. In the late 1800s, Thomas Edison’s West Orange laboratory produced pioneering film technology and built the world’s first movie studio, the Black Maria. Fort Lee soon became America’s first movie capital, but aggressive enforcement of Edison’s patents drove filmmakers west to Hollywood. Now, state policies — particularly the 2018 Film and Digital Media Tax Credit — are bringing production back. The program offers up to a 35% rebate on eligible expenses, plus diversity incentives, and is funded through 2039. These measures have attracted major developments, including Lionsgate’s Newark studio, ACX1 Studios in Atlantic City, Netflix’s massive Fort Monmouth campus, a West Orange studio near the Black Maria replica, and the future 1888 Studios in Bayonne, slated to be the largest in the Northeast. The economic impact is already visible. Productions like Happy Gilmore 2, The Home, and the upcoming Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere have filmed across the state, bringing jobs, spending, and renewed cultural attention. With deep cinematic roots and a growing network of state-of-the-art facilities, New Jersey is poised to remain a major player in the film industry for years to come.

Spirit Halloween Opens First NJ Store for 2025, with 34 More on the Way

While summer still has weeks to go, Spirit Halloween is already ushering in spooky season across New Jersey. The pop-up retailer began opening stores nationwide on August 6, with 35 New Jersey locations set to launch throughout August and September. The openings match last year’s schedule, with some already welcoming shoppers — including a Rio Grande store now operating in a former Family Dollar. Spirit Halloween is offering a 20% discount for early shoppers, valid both in-store and online. Store hours in Rio Grande run late on Mondays and vary through the week, with Sunday afternoons reserved for last-minute costume hunters. Nationwide, Spirit Halloween expects to open more than 1,500 locations this year and hire 50,000 associates and managers. Employees can expect perks such as 30% store discounts and seasonal retention bonuses for returning managers. Applications are available through the company’s Work4Spirit.com portal.
