From Nets to Beehives: Cape May Nature Center Delivers Hands-On Learning

Cape May’s Nature Center offers families a hands-on experience through its summer Harbor Safari, where kids explore marine life by pulling nets through the harbor and studying sea creatures up close. The Center also features an Aquatic Lab, animal ambassadors, a birdwatching tower, and pollinator gardens, all designed to connect visitors with the local environment. Since opening in 1992, the Nature Center has become a year-round destination for environmental education. Inside the “nature nook,” guests can meet animal ambassadors such as Tina the Box Turtle and Chili the Chinchilla. For those looking to explore even more, a climb to the Center’s observation tower offers sweeping views of the harbor. With binoculars in hand, visitors can spot ospreys fishing—or even a bald eagle swooping in to snatch a catch midair. Whether you're skimming the water with a net or peering into a beehive, the Nature Center’s interactive programs provide memorable encounters with nature for all ages.
Community Group Revives Plan to Illuminate Ocean City Landmark

Crabbing enthusiasts across New Jersey are in for a treat this August, as blue claw crabs become especially active and abundant along the state’s waterways. Thanks to warm summer temperatures, the crabs are more mobile, making this month one of the best times of the year to head out with a trap and line. August typically marks a peak in blue claw crab activity. As water temperatures reach their highest, the crustaceans begin to molt, a natural process that increases their movement and visibility in the shallows—great news for anyone hoping to fill a bucket. Crabs are more mobile during molting season, making them easier to catch. Ideal conditions include crabbing during slack tide using bait like bunker or chicken necks. While August is peak season, crabbing can continue into November. No license is needed for recreational crabbing with lines or traps, though regulations still apply.
North Wildwood Crash Claims Life of Motorcyclist Late Friday Night

The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. on August 15th, in the 600 block of Spruce Avenue, also known as Route 147. According to North Wildwood Police, one of their officers observed a black sport motorcycle traveling westbound at what appeared to be an excessive speed. Moments later, the rider lost control, veering off the roadway and crashing. Despite emergency aid and hospitalization, the rider later died. The investigation is ongoing, with speed suspected as a factor.
