Cape May Authorities Shut Down Deadly Drug Operation

A Cape May County drug investigation ended with the arrest of Harold Perez and the seizure of 3,300 baggies of Carfentanil, a powerful synthetic opioid misrepresented as heroin. Carfentanil is considered 100 times more potent than fentanyl and up to 5,000 times stronger than heroin, making it one of the most dangerous substances in existence. Law enforcement officials noted that even minimal exposure to the drug can cause death, emphasizing the danger it poses not only to users but also to first responders and lab technicians. The case is now closed pending prosecution.

Creative Conservation in Cape May Leads to Shorebird Boom

Cape May’s South Cape May Meadows Preserve has become a haven for vulnerable beach-nesting birds thanks to innovative strategies led by The Nature Conservancy. At the preserve, wildlife managers have been working to create a safe haven for vulnerable shorebird species like least terns, American oystercatchers, and black skimmers. While the preserve already limits beach access and engages in restoration, one major threat persisted: predation. Native species such as red foxes, raccoons, and even unleashed dogs were decimating nests, eating eggs and chicks before they could fledge. Predator-proof fencing, bird decoys, call boxes, and even crow effigies are helping protect species like least terns from predators. To address flooding, elevated sand islands were built to keep nests dry. These combined efforts have led to record numbers of fledglings, making the site a model for shorebird conservation across the coast.
