High Tide Threatens Cape May: Flood Warning Through Saturday Morning

A coastal flood warning remains in effect for Cape May County until 2 a.m. on Saturday, with the National Weather Service predicting water levels to rise two to three feet above ground in low-lying coastal and tidal areas. The most severe flooding is expected during Thursday evening’s high tide, potentially causing road closures and flooding of homes, businesses, and infrastructure near the shoreline. Shoreline erosion and hazardous surf conditions, including dangerous rip currents, are also expected. Residents are urged to avoid flooded areas, follow emergency guidance, and stay out of the water unless experienced and near a lifeguard.
Hurricane Erin’s Surf Threatens Millions in Shoreline Repairs Across NJ Beaches

Hurricane Erin, currently passing far offshore, is sending massive waves toward the Jersey Shore, threatening to undo recent beach replenishment projects and worsen erosion. Though the storm isn’t expected to bring significant rain or wind to New Jersey, coastal towns are bracing for 10 to 17-foot waves and strong northeast winds, especially in Cape May, Wildwood and Atlantic City. Local officials have issued warnings to residents in flood-prone areas and implemented swimming bans in more than a dozen beach towns. Communities like Avalon and Strathmere, which have already seen dune loss and lack federal funding for replenishment, are especially vulnerable. As high surf and rip currents continue, erosion and beach access issues are likely to escalate.

An 81-year-old Avalon man died six days after a head-on crash on Route 557 in Estell Manor. The accident occurred on August 12 when his car crossed the center line and struck a pickup truck. The collision occurred near milepost 15.9 around 1:30 p.m. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, where the elderly driver was found with injuries described as moderate at the time. He was transported for medical treatment but succumbed to his injuries six days later on August 18. The pickup driver sustained minor injuries.
