East Lynne Theater Company Celebrates 45th Anniversary with Show-Stopping Gala at The Pier House

Cape May’s East Lynne Theater Company is rolling out the red carpet for an unforgettable night of celebration and community support at its annual fundraising gala on Saturday, September 20, 2025. Themed “There’s No Biz Like Showbiz,” this year’s event takes place at the elegant Pier House restaurant at La Mer Beachfront Resort, offering guests a night of gourmet dining, music, and meaningful giving in support of local arts. Now in its 45th year, East Lynne invites patrons, friends, and supporters to a vibrant evening that blends glamour with purpose. The event will feature a gourmet meal prepared by The Pier House’s award-winning chef, Les Bender, served on the restaurant’s scenic beachfront terrace. Entertainment for the night includes the soulful vocals of Paula Johns and a set of timeless and modern hits from DJ Ed McDonough. From 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., guests will also enjoy a live auction, exciting raffle prizes, and dancing beneath the stars. Festive cocktail attire is preferred for this elegant celebration of the arts. All proceeds will go directly toward the theater’s operating budget, helping to sustain its programming and expand its reach in the region. East Lynne continues to raise funds for its new home at the Clemans Theater for the Arts, housed in the historic Allen AME Church, as part of its Capital Campaign. With this transition, the company plans to offer year-round performances from an increasingly diverse roster of artists. The venue for this year’s gala holds special meaning. Owned by the Andy family—longtime Cape May residents and dedicated supporters of East Lynne—The Pier House was offered as the event location in memory of the family patriarch, Gus Andy. In 2024, the family made a substantial donation to name the stage at the Clemans Theater in his honor, recognizing his lifelong devotion to both the arts and the Cape May community.

Tickets to the gala are $175 per person and can be purchased online at EastLynneTheater.org. The Pier House is located at 1317 Beach Avenue in Cape May. For additional information, visit CapeMayLaMer.com.

Cape May Through the Eyes of SI Swimsuit’s Hunter McGrady

SI Swimsuit model Hunter McGrady recently detailed her “magical” family vacation to Cape May, New Jersey, offering a three-day itinerary that blended historic elegance, beachside relaxation, and family-oriented activities. Staying at the iconic Congress Hall—the oldest seaside resort in America—McGrady’s trip began with a visit to Beach Plum Farm for fresh, garden-to-table dining and hands-on fun for the kids. Poolside afternoons at the hotel featured private cabanas, games, and classic coastal cocktails, while evenings included comfort food at The Blue Pig Tavern and ice cream from Tommy’s Folly enjoyed on the lawn. Her must-do list for visitors included Congress Hall for accommodations, local dining favorites like Peace Pie and Fins, iconic attractions such as the lighthouse, and shopping hotspots like West End Garage and Bath Time. McGrady’s account underscores Cape May’s unique blend of historic charm, luxury hospitality, coastal beauty, and family-friendly activities, making it a standout destination for both relaxation and adventure.

Plans for Hotel at Former Wonderland Pier Rejected; Sale to Follow

The future of a once-iconic Ocean City landmark is now uncertain, as the owner of the former Wonderland Pier property announces plans to sell following a setback from the city council. On Thursday, Ocean City Council voted against a proposal to classify the Wonderland Pier site as an “area in need of rehabilitation,” a designation that would have paved the way for major redevelopment. ICONA Resorts, which owns the property, had envisioned a 252-room hotel to replace the shuttered amusement park on the boardwalk. Following the vote, property owner and developer Eustace Mita confirmed his decision to sell the site, marking another chapter in the evolving story of the historic location. With the city council's rejection of redevelopment efforts and Mita's decision to sell, the next phase for the iconic property remains unclear.

Hurricane Erin Leaves Dangerous Surf and Rip Currents at Jersey Shore

Although Hurricane Erin is moving away from the East Coast, its lingering effects continue to pose serious risks along the Jersey Shore. The storm has generated powerful surf and dangerous rip currents, keeping coastal communities on high alert. Even as sunny weather returned on Friday, conditions along the shore remain treacherous. Elevated water levels and the threat of coastal flooding persist, prompting authorities to urge residents and visitors to stay cautious around beaches and waterfront areas. The potential for life-threatening rip currents makes swimming and other water activities especially hazardous at this time. Beachgoers are warmed to stay well within sight of lifeguards and take caution in the water.

Answer to the August 22nd Trivia Question

What was the intended guest capacity of the Mount Vernon Hotel in Cape May, which was considered the largest hotel in the world at the time of its construction in the 1850s?

A) 1,500
B) 2,100
C) 3,000
D) 3,500

Answer: D) 3,500

The Mount Vernon Hotel, constructed in 1852 on the west end of Cape May's oceanfront, was designed to accommodate 3,500 guests, making it the largest hotel in the world at that time. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by fire in 1856 before its completion.
