Cape May Greenlights $8.6M Police Station at Lafayette and St. Johns

Cape May approved an $8.6 million contract with Ogren Construction to build a new police station at Lafayette and St. Johns streets. The current setup inside City Hall is outdated and inadequate. The new building marks a significant investment in public safety infrastructure and reflects a shift from earlier plans pursued by a previous administration. That proposal aimed to consolidate the city’s police and fire departments into a single public safety complex on Franklin Street. However, concerns about cost and space limitations led to the plan’s rejection. Instead, Cape May moved forward with constructing a new fire department headquarters at its original location—an approach favored by voters in a 2020 referendum. The city now turns its focus to police services, with work on the new station expected to begin before the end of the year.
Seafarers Celebration to Light Up Wildwood Crest with Street Fest and Beach Fireworks

Wildwood Crest will host its annual Seafarers Celebration on September 20, featuring a street fair, live bands, kids’ activities, and a fireworks finale. The festivities begin bright and early at 9 a.m. with a sprawling street festival along New Jersey Avenue between Rambler Road and Miami Avenue. Attendees can explore rows of craft vendors, savor tasty offerings from food stands, and enjoy live performances throughout the day. The daytime entertainment lineup includes musical sets from Star Band (10:30 a.m.), Loose Ends (12:30 p.m.), and Animal House (2:30 p.m.). In addition to the music, the festival will feature magic shows, a turtle exhibit, bounce houses, face painting, children’s contests, and roaming performers, making it a perfect outing for families. At 5 p.m., daytime activities will wrap up before the celebration shifts to Centennial Park at 7 p.m. There, The Roundhouse Band will take the stage for an evening performance, leading up to the grand finale: a dazzling fireworks show over the beach at 8:30 p.m., with the best views from Centennial Park. The event is free and open to all.
Bigger Space, Broader Impact: Arc of Cape May County Begins Next Chapter

The Arc of Cape May County is expanding into a new, larger facility in Swainton to centralize and enhance services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The 15,000-square-foot main building will house administrative offices, job training programs, a day center, and respite care. A smaller building will serve as a central food pantry and job training site. The move consolidates the nonprofit's operations and introduces a commercial laundry facility to support its group homes. The Arc currently serves 250 clients and employs 240 staff, with a mission focused on inclusion, independence, and community integration.
