A Life Through the Lens: Joseph Evangelista's Cape May Journey in Focus

From the grainy textures of film to the precision of digital photography, Joe Evangelisti has spent a lifetime chasing light, memory, and meaning—often along the scenic shores of Cape May. His photographs, especially his widely recognized "Heaven and Earth," don't just document nature; they capture fleeting moments of serenity and nostalgia, transporting viewers to places etched in memory.

Heaven and Earth

Joe’s path to photography began in the most unlikely place: a PX store during his military service in Vietnam. It was there that he purchased his first camera—a Pentax Spotmatic 35mm—and carried it everywhere, capturing moments across war zones and quiet barracks. After the army, he briefly attended Antonelli School of Photography before being recruited to work at the Wildwood Leader newspaper. That job, while short-lived, gave him a taste of professional photography and the confidence to pursue it independently.

In the years that followed, Joe launched his own portrait and wedding studio in North Wildwood, eventually transitioning into a long and decorated career in law enforcement, retiring as the Chief of Police in Middle Township. For nearly three decades, photography took a backseat. But as retirement approached, the itch to return to the camera called louder than ever.

Facing a changed world dominated by digital photography, Joe embraced the new technology, relying on the strong technical foundation he had built years earlier. He began offering family portraits and weddings again—often convincing his younger police colleagues to pose with their families. But eventually, the pressures of wedding photography led him to pivot once more, this time toward what truly inspired him: capturing Cape May’s natural beauty.

It was at a craft show hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts—thanks to a last-minute vendor cancellation—that Joe first showcased his scenic landscapes to the public. He was shocked at the enthusiastic response. People lined up with cash and even left the site to find ATMs when he couldn’t accept cards. It was a turning point.

Today, Joe’s work is displayed at The West End Garage,  Cape May Snaps in Washington Street Commons and at Oyster Bay Restaurant and Bar. His images, often of sun-drenched beaches, the iconic Cove, and tranquil sunsets, evoke deep emotional connections for visitors and locals alike. Many customers have purchased photos of the same jetty where they got engaged, or a beach that holds memories of a last family vacation.

Joe's favorite piece, Heaven and Earth, was captured in a moment of serendipity—he had carefully framed the shot at the Cove, waiting for the perfect wave. When he later viewed the image, he was stunned to discover beams of light pouring through stormy clouds—details he hadn’t even noticed in the moment. That sense of divine timing now defines much of his work.

Joe remains active through his retail booths and website, Evangelista photography, or here, on Face Book. He's also planning to do more shows next year, health permitting.

More than just a photographer, Joe is a storyteller. His conversations with customers often spark shared memories and historical anecdotes about Cape May’s ever-changing coastline. From the remnants of old lighthouses to hurricane-altered beaches, his lens not only captures nature’s grandeur but also the human stories layered within each scene.

And while Joe humbly defers much of the credit to “Mother Nature,” it’s clear his unique eye and patient approach are what make his work resonate. Whether it's a blazing sunset or the quiet aftermath of a storm, Joe Evangelisti's photography captures Cape May in its most intimate and awe-inspiring moments—one frame at a time.

Wildwoods Airshow to Fly Again in 2026 Following $33M Economic Boost

The "Thunder Over the Waves" airshow will return to the Wildwoods on September 11–12, 2026, after drawing 133,000 visitors and generating over $33 million in economic impact during its 2025 debut. The free beachfront event featured aerobatics, military aircraft, and skydivers, and marked the start of the Wildwoods' fall event season. Organizers promise an even bigger show next year, though performers have yet to be announced. Vacation Town, Easy Target: Ocean City Sees Jump in Vehicle Thefts

Ocean City is experiencing a rise in car thefts, largely due to residents and visitors leaving vehicles unlocked with keys inside. Authorities are calling on the public to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activity immediately. The goal, officials say, is to disrupt the trend before it becomes a lasting problem. Similar theft patterns are being reported in other New Jersey shore towns and across the Northeast, with high-end vehicles frequently targeted. While investigations continue, Ocean City police are focusing on changing behaviors and raising community awareness as a frontline defense.
