Gateway Playhouse Holding Open Auditions for 'Scrooge the Musical'

Gateway Playhouse in Somers Point is inviting performers ages 16 and up to audition for its upcoming holiday production of Scrooge the Musical. Open auditions will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 9. Adapted from Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol, the musical blends humor, heart, and memorable songs by Leslie Bricusse. The story follows Ebenezer Scrooge on a transformative Christmas Eve journey, where visits from three ghosts help him rediscover the joy of the season. This year’s production will be directed by Chip Garrison, who helmed past Gateway holiday hits like White Christmas and A New London Christmas Carol. Rehearsals begin October 11 and will take place two to three times weekly, including some weekends. Attendance at all technical and dress rehearsals is mandatory. Auditioners should prepare a one-minute song to perform either a cappella, with a recording, or with an accompanist provided by the theater. A short monologue from the show, available in advance on the theater's website, will also be required. The theater welcomes participants from all performance levels and backgrounds. Performances are scheduled for December 5–7 and 12–14, featuring both evening and matinee shows. Tickets are available now at GatewayByTheBay.org or at the Karen S. Sutherland Box Office. Prices are $35 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under.
Gateway Playhouse is located at 738 Bay Ave., Somers Point..
Skywatchers Rejoice: October Brings Comets, Fireballs, and Meteor Showers

October is shaping up to be a show-stopper for night sky enthusiasts, offering a rare celestial trio: two meteor showers and a once-in-a-lifetime visit from Comet Lemmon. The month kicks off with the Orionid meteor shower, active from October 2 through November 7. It will peak overnight on October 21–22, producing up to 20 fast-moving meteors per hour. Known for their glowing trails, these meteors are remnants of Halley’s Comet. This year, with a new moon falling on the peak night, stargazers can expect nearly perfect viewing conditions — as long as the skies stay clear. October also marks the beginning of a “swarm year” for the Taurid meteor showers, a pair of overlapping events — the Southern and Northern Taurids — that are famous for producing bright, slow-moving fireballs. The Southern Taurids begin on October 13 and continue through late November, with a surge in activity expected around October 14. An even more intense display of fireballs could occur around November 3–4, with the Northern Taurids peaking a few days later on November 8–9. Both showers appear to radiate from the constellation Taurus, near the shimmering Pleiades star cluster. Looking beyond October, skywatchers can look forward to more celestial events, including the Leonid meteor shower peaking on November 16–17 and the Geminids — often the year's most dazzling — peaking on December 13–14 with as many as 150 meteors per hour.
Residential Proposals Spark Debate as Wonderland Pier Plans Face Another Setback

Plans to redevelop Ocean City’s former Wonderland Pier have stalled again after city council members tabled a resolution that would allow the planning board to review the site for rehabilitation. Despite recent development proposals—some involving residential use—zoning restrictions remain a challenge. Developer Eustace Mita, who once planned a hotel for the site, has since listed the property for sale. With the resolution now tabled indefinitely, the fate of Wonderland Pier remains uncertain. For now, redevelopment is on pause, as Ocean City weighs how to balance nostalgia, economic opportunity, and community priorities in reimagining one of its most historic properties.
