Vanishing Rentals, Soaring Prices: Cape May’s Workforce Feels the Squeeze

Cape May County’s workforce faces a deepening housing crisis as affordable year-round rentals vanish, replaced by vacation homes and short-term rentals. Full-time workers — from restaurant servers to police officers — struggle to find housing within reach. Rising property values, pandemic-driven demand, and regulatory challenges have pushed the crisis into overdrive. Local officials warn the situation threatens the region’s economy and essential services. Some towns, including Cape May, are taxing short-term rentals to fund future workforce housing, but change is slow as second-homeownership continues to outpace primary residences.
Ocean City Police to Collect Food Donations During “Faith and Blue Weekend”

The Ocean City Police Department, in partnership with the Ocean City Ecumenical Council, is inviting residents to contribute non-perishable food items and essential supplies as part of the nationwide Faith and Blue Weekend, taking place locally on Sunday, October 12. Locally, the focus is on restocking the Ocean City Ecumenical Council’s Food Cupboard, which distributes food and essentials to residents year-round. The cupboard is shared among all churches in the community and plays a key role in helping individuals and families who face food insecurity. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on October 12, police officers will be stationed at both Ocean City Acme Supermarkets—one at 800 West Avenue and the other at 3428 Simpson Avenue. Police department pickup trucks will be parked out front to collect donations of non-perishable goods such as canned foods, pasta, rice, and hygiene items. Community members are encouraged to stop by, donate what they can, and be part of this cooperative effort to make a difference during the season of giving.
Cape May County Braces for High Tide Flooding as Advisory Issued

Cape May County residents are being advised to prepare for minor coastal flooding during Thursday’s morning high tide, as the National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for the region. The advisory is in effect from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 9. The flooding risk is being driven by a combination of strong north winds and unusually high tides following the recent full moon. While Thursday's conditions are expected to result in minor tidal flooding, emergency officials warn that additional flooding is possible with each morning high tide through the weekend. More significant coastal flooding could develop later in the weekend and into early next week, according to the Cape May County Office of Emergency Management. Residents in low-lying areas are urged to take precautions, including relocating vehicles to higher ground ahead of high tide. Officials emphasize that drivers should never attempt to pass through flooded streets, and barricades should not be ignored under any circumstances.
