Jazz@ThePoint returns to Somers Point with John Pizzarelli headlining

Somers Point is set to swing with the sounds of New Jersey’s finest jazz musicians as the 2025 Jazz@ThePoint Festival returns October 16–18, with a lineup spotlighting artists who were either born in or currently live in the Garden State. Presented by the South Jersey Jazz Society (SJJS), this year’s festival carries the theme “Jersey Fresh,” and will feature a powerful mix of world-class performers across two venues—Gregory’s Restaurant & Bar and the Gateway Playhouse. Headlining the weekend is Grammy Award-winning guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli, a Paterson native renowned for breathing new life into the Great American Songbook. With 20 solo albums to his name and collaborations spanning from Paul McCartney to Joni Mitchell, Pizzarelli will take the stage on Friday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the Gateway Playhouse. Joining him throughout the weekend are a host of acclaimed New Jersey musicians, including jazz saxophonist Michael Pedicin, trumpet virtuoso Matt Cappy, and Benedetto Guitars president and celebrated guitarist Howard Paul, who will perform with a supergroup of jazz talents on closing night. Now in its 26th year, Jazz@ThePoint continues to attract internationally recognized artists to the Jersey Shore, offering both intimate club settings and full theater experiences to showcase top-tier jazz. Festival President Nick Regine says this year’s focus on New Jersey talent adds a personal and powerful dimension to the celebration. “We wanted to spotlight the artists who not only represent jazz on a global stage but who also call New Jersey home,” Regine said.

Sunset Beach Club Fights Eviction After State Court Ruling

The Sunset Beach Sportsmen’s Club in Cape May is fighting eviction after a New Jersey court sided with the DEP, citing lease expiration, alcohol policy violations, and conflicts with conservation funding. The club argues it has long served the community. The club has offered to purchase the land outright and claims the U.S. Department of the Interior has cleared the sale, but alleges the DEP refuses to respond to the offer or discuss alternatives. Leaders of the club are now calling on the public to intervene. They’ve asked supporters to message the governor directly and urge the state to sell the property, which the club says would preserve a historic community fixture and ensure continued public benefit.

Garden Hose and Grit: Cape May Fire Stopped Before Spreading

A Cape May homeowner used a garden hose to contain a deck fire before firefighters arrived early Tuesday morning. Shortly after 6 a.m., a fire broke out on the rear deck of a home on Bridge Lane. By the time Cape May firefighters reached the scene, the flames had largely been subdued by the homeowner. Firefighters from Cape May Firefighters IAFF Local 3495 quickly went to work extinguishing the remaining hotspots and checking the home for any signs of fire spreading beyond the deck. Crews also ventilated the structure to clear lingering smoke and ensure it was safe for re-entry. Officials noted that the homeowner’s prompt reaction likely played a key role in limiting the fire's impact. No injuries were reported, and the damage was confined to the deck area. Fire crews remained on the scene for some time to confirm that the fire was fully out.
