Thieves Target Six Marinas Across Cape May County in Gear Heist

A string of thefts targeting fishing gear at multiple South Jersey marinas has prompted a police investigation—and now, authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspects. Over a four-month span, from May 5 to September 22, 2025, unknown individuals were caught on surveillance cameras stealing fishing equipment directly from boats docked at six popular marina locations. The New Jersey State Police released footage showing the suspects in action, fleeing the scene with stolen gear. The affected marinas include:

· Stone Harbor Marina in Stone Harbor

· Light House Point Marina and Schooner Island Marina in Wildwood

· Off the Hook Bait and Tackle Marina in Cape May

· Saltwater Outpost in North Wildwood

· Two Mile Landing Marina in Wildwood Crest

The New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau is urging anyone who has additional information to come forward. They are also asking potential victims who have not yet reported losses to contact the bureau. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to analyze evidence and leads.

Lower Puts E-Bikers on Notice with Ordinance Banning Sidewalk Use

Lower Township has enacted a new ordinance aimed at regulating the growing use of electric bikes, scooters, and other low-speed motorized vehicles. Passed without public comment on October 6, the measure brings e-bikes and similar vehicles under the township’s existing bicycle regulations and sets clear rules for their operation in public spaces. The ordinance prohibits e-bikes and e-scooters from being used on sidewalks and requires all such vehicles to obey the same rules as other road users. Riders must travel in the direction of traffic, stay on the right side of the road, and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

The ordinance outlines specific vehicle types, including:

· Class 1 e-bikes (pedal-assisted, max speed 20 mph)

· Class 2 e-bikes (throttle-powered, max speed 20 mph)

· Low-speed e-scooters (max speed under 19 mph)

· Low-speed vehicles (20–25 mph)

· Motorized bicycles and scooters, including mini-bikes and skateboards

· Vehicles used for disability mobility are exempt.

Violators will face a $100 fine for a first offense and $200 for any subsequent violations.

County Considers Airport Takeover to Build Affordable Housing ‘City Within a City’

Cape May County is in negotiations with the Delaware River and Bay Authority over the future of the county airport. Officials are pursuing either a revised agreement with more local control or a complete takeover. At the heart of the discussion is a 33-acre parcel of land on the airport’s western edge, which the county hopes to use for a 300-unit housing project aimed at making Cape May County more affordable for working-class residents. Officials envision the development as a “community within a community” — a vibrant neighborhood within Lower Township featuring a mix of affordable and market-rate homes. The project would require FAA approval and faces financial and regulatory hurdles, but officials say it's a rare opportunity to create a vibrant, affordable community.
