Jersey Shore Towns Reeling as Storm Erodes Dunes, Sparks Coastal Concerns

A powerful nor’easter over the weekend severely damaged beaches in Strathmere, NJ, prompting a state of emergency. The storm wiped out recent beach replenishment and eroded 25–30 feet of dunes. Although no injuries occurred, officials are concerned about future storms, especially with limited long-term solutions and heavy reliance on federal aid. Officials report that the nor’easter erased not only the most recent beach replenishment efforts—completed just earlier this year—but also carved away an additional 25 to 30 feet of protective dunes. Although residential property damage was minimal and no injuries were reported, leaders are warning that any additional storms this season could bring serious consequences due to the weakened coastal defenses. Local officials remain concerned as hurricane season progresses and emphasize the ongoing vulnerability of the area’s coastlines to severe weather. With storm season far from over, many are bracing for what might come next.

B. A lighthouse guiding ships
C. A real estate office and observation pavilion
