Rocketry, War, and Redemption Collide in SPQR’s Latest Theatrical Premiere

SPQR Stage Company is bringing a provocative new production to the Jersey Shore this November with the East Coast premiere of The Missileman of Peenemünde, an original play written and directed by Artistic Director Bill Sterritt. The play will run for two weekends, November 14-15 and 21-22, at Studio; Space in Somers Point. This gripping one-hour drama delves into the life of Wernher von Braun, a brilliant yet polarizing figure in 20th-century history. Before becoming a key architect of the U.S. space program, von Braun led the Nazi regime’s rocket development at Peenemünde, overseeing the creation of the V-2 rocket—an invention that symbolized both technological innovation and human suffering during World War II. Following the war, von Braun was recruited by the United States to develop ballistic missiles and eventually became one of the leading figures behind the Apollo moon missions. While heralded as a visionary by many, others argue that he avoided accountability for his involvement with Nazi war crimes, aided by Cold War politics. Sterritt’s new play explores this moral gray zone through a richly theatrical lens. Described by the playwright as “Lord of the Rings meets the Space Age,” the production weaves together themes of ambition, guilt, and the seductive power of scientific progress. With stylized characters and surreal elements, the play personifies von Braun’s internal struggle between the dream of space exploration and the grim realities of wartime science. Jacob Trnka stars as von Braun, joined by Meredith Bishop, Vincent John, and Michael A. Green. The ensemble portrays figures from both von Braun’s personal and imagined worlds, including a pin-up muse symbolizing space-bound aspirations and a haunting doctor determined to awaken his conscience. Performances will be held at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, November 14, 15, 21, and 22, with 2 p.m. Saturday matinees on November 15 and 22. Tickets are $20 and available at the door or online via Eventbrite. Studio; Space is located at 112 Woodland Ave., Somers Point, directly across from The Crab Trap restaurant. Founded in 2004, SPQR Stage Company is known for its ambitious and thought-provoking theatrical works. The company continues its mission to push artistic boundaries with this timely and historically resonant production.
