Morey’s Piers Giant Wheel Temporarily Removed for Full Restoration

One of the most recognizable landmarks along the Wildwood Boardwalk is set to temporarily vanish from the skyline this offseason. Installed nearly 40 years ago, the Giant Wheel has endured decades of salt air, wind, and ocean weather. To ensure its long-term safety and performance, the massive Ferris wheel will be taken apart piece by piece, with each component inspected, maintained, and restored before being reassembled in time for the 2026 summer season. At the heart of this restoration is a critical component known as “the hub” — the central axle that supports and drives the rotation of the wheel. The hub bears the full weight of the steel structure, gondolas, and riders, making its upkeep essential for safety. Currently hidden behind the wheel’s signature LED “sun” display, the hub will be carefully removed and sent to the Philadelphia Navy Yard for full refurbishment. Although visitors may miss the iconic Ferris wheel during the off-season, its absence is only temporary. By spring, the renewed structure will return to the Wildwood skyline — refreshed, restored, and ready for another season of sun-soaked boardwalk memories.

Year-Round Sports Facility Set to Transform Cape May County Airport

A $7 million indoor sports complex featuring a 100,000-square-foot dome and 15,000-square-foot welcome center is nearing final approval in Lower Township. Aviation Sports Complex LLC, are behind the ambitious $7 million plan to bring a massive air-supported indoor athletic dome to the Cape May County Airport. If approved, the facility could open by winter 2027. The proposed complex includes a 100,000-square-foot indoor dome for various sports and a 15,000-square-foot welcome center. It would sit near Breakwater Road, close to the airport’s water tower. The welcome center is expected to feature food services, retail space, offices, check-in areas for tournaments, and restrooms. Inside the dome, the current design splits the space between 40% artificial turf for field sports like soccer, football, lacrosse, and field hockey, and 60% hardcourt surfaces for sports such as basketball, volleyball, and pickleball. There's also a proposed mezzanine seating area for spectators and recruiters, along with plans to install advanced camera systems to livestream games and assist college-bound athletes with recruiting footage. If the project gains approval by early 2026, the dome could be installed within 120 days.

Thunder Over the Waves Returns with Patriotic Tribute and Bigger Lineup

The Thunder Over the Waves Airshow will return to the Wildwoods in September 2026 with a larger-than-ever lineup of elite aerial performers and a powerful new addition: a patriotic tribute to honor America’s heroes. The show, set against the scenic Wildwoods beachfront, will include a special Tribute to the Armed Forces and 9/11 Heroes, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The event aims to celebrate courage, sacrifice, and national unity during a milestone year as the country marks 250 years of independence Beyond the aerial displays, the weekend will feature island-wide activities and events for all ages, further solidifying the airshow as a major community celebration. Organizers are encouraging sponsors and partners to get involved in what promises to be a landmark year for the annual event.  Funding for Thunder Over the Waves comes from multiple sources, with GWTIDA serving as the title sponsor.
