Fiery Crash in Cape May County Ends in Rescue, Driver Airlifted

A devastating head-on crash between a white sedan and a Jitney bus on Route 9 in the Rio Grande section of Middle Township led to a dramatic rescue on Saturday evening. The collision, which occurred around 6 p.m., left the sedan's driver trapped inside the burning vehicle, prompting immediate action from bystanders and emergency crews. Once firefighters reached the scene, they worked quickly to free the trapped driver. According to the Rio Grande Fire Department, crews had to remove all four doors and the roof of the sedan to access the injured individual, whose foot had become wedged under the gas pedal and center console. The driver was eventually pulled from the mangled vehicle after a 20-minute extrication effort and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, the driver’s injuries were not considered life-threatening. Eight passengers on the Jitney bus were treated for minor injuries, and no one else was seriously hurt. Community members and emergency personnel were praised for their swift and coordinated response, which many credited with saving the driver's life.
Animatronics, Fog, and Frights: Inside Cape May County’s Scariest House

Each October, homes across Cape May County light up with pumpkins, cobwebs, and ghosts, but one North Wildwood residence has officially earned the title of the "Spookiest Halloween House" at the Jersey Shore. Located at 105 East 5th Avenue, the home has become a seasonal sensation. What began as a modest holiday tradition has transformed into a full-scale haunted walk-through experience, complete with more than 30 animatronic figures, eerie lighting, immersive sound effects, and spine-chilling surprises. The display, created by homeowner Jim Manna and his family, has grown exponentially over the years. Initially meant to entertain neighbors, the Halloween setup now draws visitors from across the region, who come to loop through the backyard attraction and experience the cinematic scares for themselves. This haunting tradition is just one of many holiday setups created by the Manna family, who also decorate for Christmas and Easter. But Halloween is where their creativity—and their creepy animatronics—truly shine. Though other decorated homes were nominated in a recent online call for Cape May County’s top Halloween displays, nearly 85% of submissions mentioned this North Wildwood address, cementing its reputation as a local legend.
