Tidal Flooding Possible: Cape May County Under Coastal Flood Advisory Through Thursday

Cape May County is under a coastal flood advisory beginning Wednesday at noon and lasting through 8 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. The advisory was updated Tuesday afternoon, warning of possible tidal flooding in low-lying coastal areas. Forecasters expect up to one foot of water above ground level in vulnerable zones along shorelines, tidal rivers, and bays. This could lead to minor flooding of roads in coastal and bayside neighborhoods, and in some cases, full or partial road closures may occur. Motorists are advised to avoid driving through flooded areas and to relocate vehicles from locations known to flood easily. For safety, residents should avoid walking or driving through flooded areas. Just six inches of fast-moving water can knock someone off their feet, while a foot of water can carry away most vehicles. Anyone caught in rising water should move to higher ground and call emergency services if necessary.

Adorable Additions Arrive at Cape May Zoo as Capybara Gives Birth

The Cape May County Zoo has announced the arrival of two new residents: a pair of baby capybaras born to one of the zoo’s female capybaras, Buttercup, on Sunday. The birth came slightly ahead of schedule, as both Buttercup and another female, Marigold, were expected to deliver later this month or in November. The father of the pups is Goomba, the zoo’s male capybara and a key participant in the facility’s breeding efforts. The zoo shared that Buttercup and her pups are doing well. Capybaras are the largest rodents in the world and usually give birth to litters of four to five pups following a gestation period of around five months. This birth is part of a managed breeding effort under the Species Survival Plan (SSP), a program coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The SSP focuses on responsible breeding to maintain a healthy and genetically diverse capybara population across accredited institutions. With Marigold still expecting, the zoo may soon welcome even more capybara pups to the growing family.

Rapid Change Spurs Heated Race for Commission Seats in West Cape May

Six candidates, including two slates and one independent, are running for three open commission seats in West Cape May’s November 4 election. The race is unfolding amid rapid development, rising water usage, and concerns about preserving the borough’s rural identity. While both teams agree on many policy issues, they differ sharply on transparency, governance style, and how to manage growth. Team West Cape May emphasizes continuity and infrastructure projects already underway, while Team Ready to Serve criticizes the current administration for lacking leadership and shutting out public input. The top three vote-getters will be elected, regardless of their team affiliations
