Local Churches and Food Pantries Step Up as Families Face SNAP Uncertainty

As the federal government shutdown continues, families relying on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) face a looming disruption in support. If the shutdown remains unresolved by Saturday, November 1, monthly SNAP benefits will not be distributed, leaving many without critical assistance for groceries and basic needs. Despite the uncertainty surrounding SNAP, students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program will still receive breakfast and lunch at school. These school meals remain fully funded and unaffected by the shutdown, ensuring children continue to have access to nutritious food during the day. With many in the school community facing growing concern over the possible loss of benefits, families are encouraged to seek help through local and statewide organizations offering food assistance. A number of Cape May County food pantries and community centers remain open and ready to support residents in need.
Local Food Assistance Resources:
· Lazarus House, Wildwood Seashore Community Church of the Nazarene, Lower Township St. Barnabas by the Bay Episcopal Church, Villas First Presbyterian Church of Cape May St. Casimir’s Thrift Shop and Food Pantry, Woodbine Ocean City Community Food Cupboard at St. Peter’s Methodist Church The Family Success Center, Rio Grande Bethel Commandment Church, Whitesboro Families are urged to reach out to these organizations for food support or guidance during this challenging time. Continued community support remains vital as many navigate the financial strain caused by the shutdown..
Ferry Service Scales Back Oct. 31 Trips Due to Wind and High Waves

The Cape May-Lewes Ferry will be modifying its sailing schedule on October 31 in response to expected high winds and rough seas. As a precaution, several departures have been canceled for the day. The affected sailings include the 11:15 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. departures from Lewes, Delaware, as well as the 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. trips from Cape May, New Jersey. Ferry officials are monitoring weather conditions closely and may make additional changes as needed. Travelers are encouraged to check the ferry’s official website or social media platforms for the most up-to-date information.
Cape May Moves to Expand Workforce Housing Above Downtown Businesses

In a move to address the city's ongoing housing shortage for year-round workers, Cape May’s City Council has introduced an ordinance that would open the door for more workforce housing units above commercial properties in the city's C-1 Business District. The proposal, introduced unanimously on October 21, is aimed at increasing access to long-term rental options for those living and working in Cape May. The ordinance prioritizes permanent housing over short-term vacation rentals, which have become increasingly dominant in the resort town’s real estate market. Under the proposed regulations, apartments situated above retail businesses must either be owner-occupied or leased for at least 90 consecutive days. These units cannot be used as short-term rentals and are not eligible for mercantile licenses typically required for such operations. The goal is to ensure the space is used for individuals establishing a primary residence rather than seasonal visitors. The ordinance is scheduled for a final vote during the City Council meeting on November 17. A public hearing will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Cape May City auditorium at 643 Washington Street.
