Cape May Breaks Ground on New Police Headquarters

The City of Cape May is set to mark a major milestone in its commitment to public safety with the groundbreaking of a brand-new police station. The ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at 3:30 p.m. at the future home of the facility, located at the corner of Lafayette Street and Franklin Street. Designed with the future in mind, the new police station will incorporate modern technologies, dedicated training areas, and improved accessibility for the public. The facility also emphasizes sustainable design, aligning with broader city goals for environmental responsibility and long-term efficiency. For the officers who serve the Cape May community daily, the new space will offer upgraded resources and working conditions, enhancing their ability to respond swiftly and professionally to public safety needs. Construction is expected to be completed by late spring of 2027. The groundbreaking ceremony is open to the public and members of the media.

Jersey Shore Landmark with Giant Lobster Sign Hits the Market

An iconic piece of the Jersey Shore is officially up for sale. The Oar House Pub, a beloved Sea Isle City waterfront staple recognized by its giant red lobster sign, is listed for $6,999,999. The sale includes the business, liquor license, building, and most of its contents—plus the eye-catching lobster emblem that has welcomed generations of visitors. Situated in the historic Fish Alley neighborhood at 42nd Street, the bayfront property has deep roots in the town’s maritime past. Over the years, it evolved into the Oar House Pub, a go-to destination for dining, drinks, and live entertainment. The venue’s expansive layout includes three separate bars, two dining rooms with a combined 200-person capacity, and a live music stage that has hosted performances for over five decades. The main bar seats 25 guests, while the second-floor bar can accommodate up to 100, making it ideal for private events and banquets. Outdoors, the "Alley Bar" offers an additional entertainment space for 40 patrons. Adding to its appeal are waterfront views and boat slips, allowing patrons to dock and dine. The sale also covers all essentials: kitchen appliances, tables, booths, dinnerware, barware, and stored equipment. Bird Migration Peaks at Avalon Seawatch with Hundreds of Thousands in Flight

Each fall, South Jersey’s coastline becomes a front-row seat to one of nature’s most impressive spectacles: the migration of hundreds of thousands of waterbirds. The Avalon Seawatch, located on the beach between 8th and 9th Avenues, offers an unparalleled vantage point to witness this avian phenomenon—especially during its peak in November. The most commonly spotted species include the Black Scoter, Surf Scoter, Double-crested Cormorant, Red-throated Loon, and Northern Gannet. The Black Scoter dominates the count, with more than 300,000 sightings per season and single-day totals reaching 50,000. Surf Scoters often travel in the same flocks and average over 135,000 each year. These sea ducks remain a familiar sight through the winter months, distinguished by subtle differences in head and bill coloration. Cormorants, loons, and gannets also appear in striking numbers. Double-crested Cormorants average over 150,000 each fall, while Red-throated Loons, contrary to their more widely known relatives the Common Loon, surpass 60,000 annually. Northern Gannets, easily recognized by their six-foot wingspan and dramatic dive-bombing behavior, typically number over 65,000 during the season. The Seawatch is free and open to the public, thanks to the support of the Borough of Avalon. For those interested in learning more, the Cape May Bird Observatory and the Nature Center of Cape May offer programs, resources, and guidance throughout the migration season.
