Record-Breaking Shark Makes Appearance Near Cape May

A massive great white shark—the largest ever tagged in the Atlantic Ocean—was recently tracked just off the coast of Atlantic City and Cape May, making waves among researchers and beachgoers alike.

The shark, named Contender, was detected via satellite ping at 9:13 p.m. on Wednesday, just south of Atlantic City. Marine experts believe he’s heading south for the winter, following a seasonal migration pattern.

Originally tagged earlier this year near the Florida-Georgia border, Contender measures an impressive 13 feet, 9 inches long and weighs 1,653 pounds. He was named in honor of Contender Boats, a longtime supporter of the shark-tracking organization Ocearch.

In just two weeks, this apex predator traveled down from the waters near Newfoundland to the Jersey Shore. His journey is being tracked via a SPOT tag that transmits real-time data, allowing researchers to study his movements for up to five years. In addition to the tracking technology, scientists also collected biological samples to further investigate his health and behavior.

Wildwood Firefighter Aids Passenger During In-Flight Medical Crisis

While flying home from a family trip to Orlando on November 6, Wildwood firefighter Nick Palmer found himself in the middle of a medical emergency aboard a Spirit Airlines flight bound for Atlantic City International Airport. When flight attendants called for medical assistance, he didn’t hesitate.

Palmer quickly assessed the situation and led efforts to stabilize the distressed passenger, providing emergency care until the plane landed safely in New Jersey. Thanks to his swift and steady actions, the flight avoided an emergency landing.

City officials praised Palmer’s professionalism and quick thinking, noting that even off duty, he embodied the spirit of the Wildwood Fire Department. His response was highlighted as a reflection of the department's high standards and ongoing training.

Leadership within the fire department was also credited for instilling such readiness, with officials pointing to the strong guidance of Chief Ernie Troiano III, Deputy Chief Daniel Dunn, and their team.
