Cape May Convention Center to Host Family Holiday Event Dec. 14

Cape May is bringing festive cheer to the community with a special holiday event on Sunday, December 14. Hosted by the City of Cape May and the Cape May Police Department, the Captain Nick Fedoroff Community Christmas Celebration promises an afternoon full of seasonal fun for all ages.

The event will take place from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cape May Convention Center, located at 714 Beach Avenue. This free, family-oriented celebration will feature a variety of activities designed to delight children and families alike. Guests can enjoy bounce houses, games, face painting, a photo booth, and snacks. One of the main attractions includes a chance to take photos with Santa Claus.

Organizers invite all members of the community to come together for this joyful occasion, which honors the spirit of giving and togetherness during the holiday season.

Tram Car No. 8 to Get New Life as Wildwood Museum Centerpiece

In a race against time, the Wildwood Historical Society has stepped in to save a piece of the Jersey Shore's storied past — tram car No. 8, a 1960s-era relic from the Wildwood boardwalk that was nearly lost to the junkyard.

Once a staple of summer boardwalk rides, the vintage tram car had been collecting rust in storage on Hunt’s Pier and was days away from being discarded. Now, the society is preparing to restore and display it as a centerpiece of its Pacific Avenue museum — a move they say will preserve a cherished piece of local history.

Taylor Henry, president of the Historical Society, considers the tram car the most significant artifact the organization has ever acquired. The plan is to return the car to its classic appearance, capturing the nostalgic image that generations of beachgoers remember. The restoration, however, presents some hefty challenges.

Despite the hurdles, the project is moving ahead quickly, thanks to overwhelming support from the Historical Society’s board. What started as a casual mention from the Wildwood Special Improvement District — which offered the tram car for donation — has evolved into a full-scale preservation mission.

The Historical Society is accepting donations and encouraging people to shop from their online store, with all proceeds helping to fund the restoration. Ultimately, Henry and her team hope that tram car No. 8 will serve as a nostalgic attraction inside the museum, giving visitors a chance to relive the golden days of the Wildwood boardwalk — and ensure that this iconic piece of local heritage doesn’t disappear into history.

Tiny Trackers and Nectar Corridors: Saving Butterflies and Bats

Bats and monarch butterflies are vital pollinators facing increasing threats from habitat loss and climate change. In the Southwest, nectar-feeding bats sustain themselves on agave nectar during migration and, in return, pollinate the plants essential for tequila and mezcal production. Conservationist Kristen Lear leads restoration efforts planting agaves along the bats’ migratory route. Meanwhile, scientists are now using tiny Bluetooth trackers, pioneered at the Cape May Arts and Science Center, to follow monarch butterflies on their thousand-mile journey, revealing new insights into their resilience and travel patterns.
