Ocean City Opens Time Capsule from 1999, Revealing Local Treasures

A time capsule that spent 25 years tucked away in the attic of Ocean City’s City Hall was opened on New Year’s Eve, offering a nostalgic look at the town’s turn-of-the-century culture and community pride. Originally intended to be buried beneath the Millennium Clock on the Boardwalk at Ninth Street in 1999, the capsule was instead placed in City Hall’s attic due to Boardwalk construction. Roughly the size of a kitchen trash can, the sealed metal container was packed with memorabilia capturing Ocean City’s local life and spirit at the dawn of the year 2000. Unveiled during the city’s First Night celebration—a family-friendly, alcohol-free event featuring over 70 performances and activities across 20 venues—the capsule’s contents included family photographs, locally branded T-shirts, event listings, advertising materials, newspapers, and more. Some highlights included black-and-white beach photos from 1913 featuring the Oves family, known for their long-standing presence in Ocean City’s restaurant scene, and a CD of Christmas music recorded by the Ocean City Pops, which came as a surprise even to longtime city staff. Officials say the collection provides a unique snapshot of Ocean City’s past and a reminder of how the town has evolved. There are plans to display the contents at the Ocean City Historical Museum, allowing residents and visitors alike to experience the preserved pieces of local history.
Comics, Cosplay and Celebrities Highlight WILD-CON’s January Comeback

The Jersey Shore Comic Book Show is set to kick off the new year with the return of WILD-CON at the Wildwoods Convention Center this January. The one-day event takes place Saturday, Jan. 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., bringing together comic book fans, collectors, artists and cosplayers for a full day of pop culture entertainment. Organizers say the 2025 edition will feature a mix of returning favorites and new attractions as the convention season begins. Featured guests scheduled to appear include actor Glenn Taranto, voice actor Travis Artz, and actresses and producers Genoveva Rossi and Michelle Santiago. Attendees will also have the chance to meet a lineup of comic artists, including Jeff Brennan, Keith Williams, Joe DelBeato, Criss Madd, Bob Petrecca, Denny Fincke and Tom Schloendorn, along with a surprise guest making a return to the convention scene. Vendors throughout the convention floor will offer comic books, trading cards, toys, collectibles, crafts and other fan-focused merchandise. In addition to shopping and guest appearances, WILD-CON will feature interactive activities such as Hot Wheels die-cast car races and a trivia game covering anime, superheroes, music and pop culture. Live performances are planned from Dangerous Dan and a new addition this year, JINX. Cosplay will once again be a major highlight, with multiple costume groups on hand to provide entertainment, interactive experiences and photo opportunities for fans of all ages. A professional photographer will also be available for attendees and cosplayers looking to capture high-quality photos from the event. The Cosplay Contest is scheduled for 3 p.m., inviting participants to showcase costumes inspired by superheroes, anime characters and comic book or movie icons, with prizes awarded to standout entries. General admission is $10, with children 10 and under admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. Tickets are available through Eventbrite and at the door on the day of the event.
