Black Ice and Bitter Cold: Hazardous Conditions Expected Across N.J. Monday Morning

A powerful winter storm has brought heavy snow and treacherous ice to New Jersey, snarling travel and closing schools across the state. As of Sunday evening, several areas had already reported snow accumulations of up to 12 inches, with freezing rain and sleet adding an icy layer to roads and sidewalks. Winter storm warnings remain active for most of the state until 1 p.m. today, though Cape May County was removed from the advisory after temperatures briefly climbed above freezing, causing a shift from snow to rain in our region. The storm’s icy grip extends beyond Monday, with a prolonged stretch of arctic air settling over the region. Highs for the upcoming week are forecast to remain in the teens and 20s, while nighttime lows will dip into the single digits or even below zero. Wind chills are expected to make conditions feel even colder, reaching as low as -10°F at night in many parts of the state. Wind gusts of up to 35 mph will also contribute to the bitter cold and potential drifting snow. These extreme conditions are expected to persist into the weekend. While Monday remains the biggest concern for travel and road conditions, the extended forecast suggests largely dry weather after the storm passes, with only a slight chance of snow on Thursday. A statewide state of emergency remains in effect, and hundreds of school districts have already canceled classes for Monday (see below) as plow crews begin clearing snow and ice. Residents are advised to stay home if possible and to exercise caution during any necessary travel, especially during the Monday morning commute.
Cape May County Schools Close Monday as Major Winter Storm Hits NJ

Yesterday’s powerful winter storm that slammed the East coast has prompted widespread school closures and delayed openings across Cape May County for Monday, January 26, 2026. With up to 12 inches of snow in some areas of NJ accompanied by a hazardous layer of ice from sleet and freezing rain, local districts are preparing for severe disruptions. In anticipation of dangerous road conditions and potential power outages, numerous Cape May County school districts have canceled classes entirely. Others are likely to follow suit as snow continues to fall through Monday and into the evening hours. The following Cape May County school districts have announced full closures for Monday: Avalon Stone Harbor Schools Cape May City School District Cape May County Special Services School District Cape May County Technical High School District Dennis Township School District Lower Cape May Regional School District Lower Township Elementary School District Middle Township Public School District North Wildwood School District Ocean City School District Upper Township School District West Cape May School District Wildwood City School District Wildwood Crest Borough School District, Woodbine School District Residents are advised to monitor their local district communications and weather updates, as additional changes to school schedules may occur.
New Jersey Passes Sweeping Flood Protections; Cape May County Pushes Back

New Jersey has adopted a major set of flood protection rules aimed at addressing climate change and increasing flood risks. The new PACT REAL rules raise building elevation requirements, expand flood maps, and tighten regulations in coastal and flood-prone areas. While environmental groups hail the move as long overdue, Cape May County officials and business leaders criticize the rules as costly and harmful to development. A transition period will allow projects to apply under previous rules until July 20, 2026.
