Frozen Waters Force Ferry to Cancel Over 60 Trips Between Cape May and Lewes

Harsh winter conditions have severely disrupted operations for the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, which has been forced to cancel 64 scheduled departures since the end of January due to thick ice across Delaware Bay and the Cape May Canal. The ferry's ability to operate has been especially hindered near the Cape May terminal, where solid ice has made navigation impossible in recent days. Crews have attempted to test the ice each morning by sending out empty vessels, but the buildup has been too severe to allow travel. While the disruption has been significant, ferry officials note that it is not unprecedented—referencing January 1977, when ice shut down the service for 45 straight days. Warmer temperatures forecasted in the coming days offer some hope, and limited service resumed briefly on the afternoon of February 10. Other maritime services in the region have also been impacted, including the Pilots' Association for the Bay and River Delaware, which relocated its operations due to the frozen conditions. Passengers are encouraged to monitor the ferry’s social media channels for the latest updates as the situation evolves.

SPQR Stage Company to Premiere 10 Original Plays in Somers Point

SPQR Stage Company will present its annual “New Works Weekend” on Feb. 21 and 22 at Studio;Space in Somers Point, showcasing 10 original short plays in their world premiere performances. Hosted by Artistic Director and award-winning playwright Bill Sterritt, the two-day festival gives both emerging and established playwrights the opportunity to see their work performed before a live audience for the first time — an important step in the creative development process. Each approximately 10-minute play will be presented as a staged reading by local actors Justine Harrison, John Alvarez and Chikita Wallace. The selected works were submitted by writers from across the country, including several from South Jersey communities such as Ventnor, Ocean City, Linwood, Mays Landing and Cape May Court House. Themes range from family relationships and personal struggles to humor, fantasy and thought-provoking social issues. Performances will be held at 2 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, with a livestream option available for Saturday’s show. Tickets are $20, available at the door for in-person attendance or online for the livestream. The event continues SPQR’s long-standing mission of fostering innovative, boundary-pushing theater in the region.
