Cape May Cleared to Launch $24.3M Seawall Expansion

Cape May has received federal authorization to begin construction on its long-planned $24.3 million seawall expansion along Beach Avenue. The project, funded through a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant announced in 2022, is designed to strengthen a section of shoreline identified as vulnerable in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. City officials have warned that hundreds of homes could face significant flooding during a major storm if additional protections are not put in place. After nearly four years of waiting for final approval, the clearance allows the city to move forward with construction. Local leaders, including Mayor Zack Mullock, had recently pressed members of New Jersey’s congressional delegation to help expedite the release of funds. With authorization now secured, the project marks a major step toward improving storm resilience and protecting Cape May’s coastal community from future hurricanes.

Cape May Zoo Reveals Names of Its Internet-Famous Capybara Pups

The Cape May County Zoo’s seven viral capybara pups officially have names, delighting fans who have been closely following their growth on social media. Marigold, one of the zoo’s capybaras, gave birth to five pups with a playful cheese-themed naming twist: Brie, Gouda, Havarti, Mozzarella and Ricotta. Brie is the only female and the smallest of the group, while Ricotta was born missing a rear toe, just like his mother. Gouda is easily recognized by pink ears and a darker nose and is known as the most social, Mozzarella is more timid, and Havarti has quickly earned a reputation as the most energetic of the litter. Buttercup’s two pups continue a floral family naming tradition and are called Tulip and Sprout. Their names honor their mother, aunt and grandmother, Budette. Tulip has a lighter coat, while Sprout is slightly darker, and both are noticeably larger than Marigold’s younger five. Because of the recent stretch of frigid South Jersey weather, the pups have been staying warm inside their barn enclosure. Zoo officials say visitors can expect to see them outside once temperatures reach at least 45 degrees with sunny skies. The Cape May County Zoo remains open year-round, and anticipation is building for the first mild day when the now-named capybara pups can explore their outdoor habitat again.

Atlantic City Casino Workers’ Fight Over Indoor Smoking Returns to Court

Casino workers in Atlantic City are renewing their legal challenge to indoor smoking after the New Jersey Appellate Division sent their case back to trial court. The lawsuit contests the casino exemption in the state’s 2006 Smoke-Free Air Act, which allows smoking on up to 25% of gaming floors. Workers, organized through the group CEASE and backed by the United Auto Workers, argue the policy endangers their health and violates equal protection rights. After a lower court dismissed the case in 2024, appeals judges ruled that it had not been fully or fairly reviewed. The case now returns to court for further consideration as advocacy efforts continue statewide.
