Army Corps Targets Cape May County in Rapid Beach Replenishment Plan

Federal officials are moving forward with plans to fast-track emergency repairs to several heavily eroded Jersey Shore beaches, aiming to complete work before the start of the summer tourism season. During a recent tour of Ocean City, Upper Township, Avalon and North Wildwood, a senior U.S. Army Corps of Engineers official said tens of millions of dollars could be directed toward urgent beach nourishment projects, with funding potentially available within one to two months and construction beginning shortly after. The proposed effort would prioritize the most severely damaged areas in Cape May County, where sand loss intensified after Hurricane Erin last August and was worsened by additional fall storms, including a nor’easter. Communities such as Ocean City, Strathmere in Upper Township and Sea Isle City have raised concerns in recent months about delayed or canceled replenishment projects, noting that their last Army Corps-backed fill was completed in early 2024

Pageant Founded in Atlantic City Continues to Bypass Its Hometown

The Miss America Pageant is once again bypassing Atlantic City, continuing a long pattern of distance from the city where the iconic competition was founded more than a century ago. Miss America began in Atlantic City in 1921 and remained a signature event in the resort city for decades, helping shape its identity as a national entertainment destination. The pageant stayed rooted there until 2005 before relocating to Las Vegas. After several years away, it returned to Atlantic City from 2013 through 2018, raising hopes that the relationship had been restored. Those hopes have faded in the years since. Following its departure in 2018, the pageant has moved between venues including Mohegan Sun in Connecticut and Orlando, Florida. Once again, Atlantic City has been left out of the conversation, with no announcement that the pageant plans to return. Instead, the Miss America Organization plans to feature the event in Philadelphia as part of the city’s Salute to Independence Parade on July 3. The parade will include the reigning Miss America and 52 state ambassadors, who will ride through Philadelphia in convertibles wearing evening gowns and signature footwear as a nod to the long-running tradition. The move has drawn criticism from Atlantic City supporters who see it as another example of the city’s legacy being exported elsewhere.

Atlantic City International Welcomes Allegiant with New Nonstop Routes

Allegiant Air has officially launched nonstop service from Atlantic City International Airport (ACY), introducing new routes to Punta Gorda and St. Pete-Clearwater on Florida’s Gulf Coast. The Las Vegas-based airline began operations Friday, becoming the first of two new carriers set to expand service at the Egg Harbor Township airport this year. To mark the inaugural flights, Allegiant is offering limited one-way introductory fares starting at $39. The flights will operate up to twice weekly, providing South Jersey travelers with additional affordable options for winter escapes and spring travel, including access to Gulf Coast beaches and popular destinations such as Clearwater during spring training season. The promotional fares are available for a limited time. Punta Gorda travel must be completed by May 8, while St. Petersburg travel is valid through May 22. Seats are limited, and additional baggage fees and other restrictions may apply.
