Cape May County Herald Wins Two First-Place NJPA Awards

The Cape May County Herald has received two first-place awards in the New Jersey Press Association’s annual contest for weekly newspapers, recognizing work published in 2025. Editor and reporter Collin Hall earned top honors in the Enterprise category for an in-depth investigative story examining the worsening shortage of affordable housing for working residents in Cape May County. Judges praised the piece for its thorough reporting, strong interviews, and detailed exploration of a problem affecting communities locally and across the country. Assistant Editor for Print Joe Dziublenski was awarded first place for headline writing, based on a submission of three creative headlines published over the past year. Judges described the category as highly competitive and commended his entry for its imagination and presentation. The recognition marks the third consecutive year the Herald has won at least two first-place awards in the NJPA contest. It is also the third straight year Hall has earned a first-place honor and the sixth consecutive year Dziublenski has received at least one NJPA award for headline writing. The awards will be formally presented at the NJPA’s annual dinner and ceremony on April 23.
Navy Special Operations Boats Conduct Training in Cape May Back Bays

Two specialized Navy vessels were seen operating in the back bays of Cape May County this week, drawing attention from local boaters. The boats were identified as Combatant Craft Assault (CCA) vessels, high-speed tactical craft used by the U.S. Navy’s Special Warfare Combatant Craft Crewmen to support maritime special operations missions. Designed for coastal and shallow-water environments, the 41-foot boats can exceed 40 knots and are built to transport and protect Navy SEALs and other special operations forces. Their shallow draft allows them to maneuver through tight waterways like those found along the Jersey Shore. Equipped with advanced navigation and communications systems, ballistic protection, and the capability to carry mounted defensive weapons, the vessels are engineered for high-risk missions. A particularly noticeable feature was their surface-piercing cleaver propellers, which enhance speed and efficiency by reducing drag at high performance levels. While officials have not publicly detailed the purpose of their presence, the sighting likely reflects routine military training exercises in the region’s unique coastal terrain.
Bird Flu Confirmed in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland Counties Amid Statewide Surge

New Jersey wildlife officials are monitoring a surge in bird flu cases after more than 1,100 sick or dead wild birds were reported between Feb. 14 and Feb. 16. Preliminary HPAI detections have been confirmed in Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland counties with additional reports in several other parts of the state. Most cases involve Canada geese. Officials urge residents not to handle dead birds, to keep pets away, and to report clusters of five or more dead birds through the NJDEP reporting system. The CDC considers the outbreak a low risk to the general public.
