Dangerous Blizzard Conditions Expected from Sandy Hook to Cape May

In case you haven’t heard, New Jersey is bracing for a powerful winter storm expected to bring widespread snowfall totals ranging from 8 to more than 20 inches, with the heaviest accumulations forecast along the Jersey Shore. Blizzard warnings are in effect from Sandy Hook to Cape May, where strong wind gusts topping 50 mph could create whiteout conditions and dangerously low visibility. The rest of the state remains under a winter storm warning as forecasters predict heavy snow bands capable of dropping 1 to 2 inches per hour Sunday night into early Monday. Governor Mikie Sherrill has declared a state of emergency effective noon Sunday to help coordinate response efforts and activate consumer protections, including anti-price gouging measures. While the declaration does not restrict travel, officials are strongly urging residents to stay off the roads during the height of the storm due to hazardous driving conditions, blowing and drifting snow, and the potential for coastal flooding along tidal waterways. Light precipitation may begin as a rain-snow mix in parts of southern New Jersey before transitioning to all snow by midday Sunday. Snow is expected to taper off by Monday afternoon, but cold temperatures and gusty winds will linger, producing wind chills in the 20s. Residents are preparing for possible power outages and extended periods of limited travel by stocking up on prescriptions, non-perishable food, water, pet supplies, baby necessities, and batteries. Officials are also warning that the storm will produce dense, wet snow—often referred to as “heart attack snow”—which is significantly heavier and more strenuous to shovel. Health experts advise individuals with heart or respiratory conditions to avoid snow removal and to take precautions if clearing snow becomes necessary.

Lower Cape May Wrestling Makes History with First State Final Berth

Lower Cape May Regional advanced to the first state final in program history Friday night with a 42-27 comeback victory over Caldwell in the Group II semifinals. The Caper Tigers trailed 22-15 midway through the match before Danny Byrne’s 12-7 win at 165 pounds cut the deficit and Ashton Ray’s pin at 175 pounds gave Lower its first lead of the night. A penalty against Caldwell during that stretch added to the momentum swing. From there, Lower dominated the upper weight classes. Shane Morrell (190), David Douglas (215), and Jake Hearon (285) each recorded pins in rapid succession to extend the lead and seal the historic win. Earlier in the night, Chase Hansen wrestled up a weight class and earned a key pin, while Tristian Rosemeyer and Eli Glover also contributed decisive victories. The win continues a steady rise for the program under coach Billy Damiana, which has captured two South Jersey Group II titles in the past three seasons and reached three straight sectional finals. Now 22-3, the Caper Tigers will face defending champion Rumson-Fair Haven in Sunday’s state championship match at Jersey Mike’s Arena at Rutgers University, aiming to secure the first state title in school history. Also in attendance for the win was former coach Bill Garrison, he went 125-37 as the Caper Tigers' coach from 1973-82. Players and coaches recognized the community’s long-standing support as they celebrated the breakthrough achievement. “We did it for the community. We did it for Coach Garrison,”  Damiana said. "This was a long time coming," he added before he and his team got an escort from a firetruck around town.
