State of Emergency Declared as Record Snowfall Threatens New Jersey

A powerful winter storm is sweeping across New Jersey with the potential to deliver record-breaking snowfall and widespread blizzard conditions. Forecasters say the heaviest snow is expected well into Monday morning, with total accumulations ranging from 12 to 24 inches statewide. Coastal areas, including Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties, could see totals approaching or exceeding two feet, while even western counties are expected to receive well over a foot. Wind gusts of 45 mph inland and up to 60 mph along the coast are forecast to create whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous. In response, Gov. Mikie Sherrill declared a state of emergency for all 21 counties, and a statewide travel restriction for non-essential vehicles put into effect overnight. NJ Transit service is suspended, and hundreds of school districts have announced closures, with some disruptions expected to continue into Tuesday. As the storm intensifies, thousands of homes and businesses have already lost power, and officials warn that outages could increase as strong winds and heavy snow weigh down trees and power lines. Utility crews, including teams from out of state, are prepared to respond. Snow is expected to taper off this afternoon, but cleanup efforts could take several days in the hardest-hit areas.
Cape May Secures $24.3M for Long-Awaited Seawall, Promenade Project

Cape May City has received authorization to move forward with its long-planned Seawall Flood Mitigation Project after securing more than $24.3 million in federal funding. The funding, confirmed through an announcement from U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew and backed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, clears a major financial hurdle that had delayed progress on the project for years. The improvements are aimed at addressing vulnerabilities exposed during Superstorm Sandy in 2012, when flooding identified a section of the seawall as a weak point in the city’s coastal defense system. Although the city’s existing seawall was originally built following the devastating 1962 Ash Wednesday Storm, officials have determined that upgrades are necessary to strengthen protection against modern storm threats and rising coastal risks. Plans finalized in 2022 call for extending the seawall and promenade from just east of Madison Avenue to Wilmington Avenue and continuing along Wilmington Avenue. In addition to reinforcing flood protection, the project will enhance the popular beachfront promenade used by residents and visitors year-round. Cape May intends to put the project out to bid once the federal grant is fully processed, with construction targeted to begin in fall 2026. City leaders and supporters view the funding approval as a significant milestone that will improve long-term shoreline resilience and protect both property and infrastructure in one of New Jersey’s most historic coastal communities.
Sea Isle–Avalon Bridge Shutting Down Overnight for Construction

The Townsends Inlet Bridge between Sea Isle City and Avalon will close overnight from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., Feb. 23–26, for construction work. Contractors will install new pilings to support a modern fender system designed to protect the bridge from boat collisions. Drivers will be detoured via Avalon Boulevard or Sea Isle Boulevard, and officials urge motorists to plan for extra travel time. The bridge commission awarded a $4.9 million contract in October to South State Inc., a Bridgeton-based construction company, to replace the aging fender system. The new system will provide added protection for the massive support piers beneath the 1939 drawbridge, which was originally constructed as part of a New Deal-era public works program and remains a vital link along Ocean Drive. County officials describe the project as an important investment in safety, marine navigation, and long-term infrastructure protection for one of the Shore’s busiest waterways.
Team USA Ends Canada’s Reign with Dramatic Overtime Victory

Jack Hughes scored 1:41 into overtime to lift Team USA to a 2-1 victory over Canada in the Olympic gold medal game in Milan. Canada played without captain Sidney Crosby, who missed his second consecutive game due to a lower-body injury sustained in the quarterfinals. Despite several high-quality chances from Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon, the Canadians were unable to solve Hellebuyck in the decisive moments. Matt Boldy had opened the scoring for the United States midway through the first period, maneuvering past defenders before finishing on his backhand to give the Americans an early 1-0 lead. Hellebuyck shut the door in the third period, stopping all 14 shots he faced to force overtime and set the stage for Hughes’ historic finish. For Team USA, the triumph represented more than a gold medal. It signaled the arrival of a generation that had long chased Olympic glory and finally delivered, fulfilling a legacy decades in the making.
