Cape May Mayor Raises $200K in First Week, Shakes Up NJ-2 Democratic Primary

Cape May Mayor Zack Mullock has quickly positioned himself as a serious contender in the race for New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District, raising $200,000 in the first week after launching his campaign. The early fundraising total signals that Mullock, despite entering the Democratic primary later than several competitors, is building financial momentum ahead of the June election. Mullock joined the race with less than four months to organize and campaign before primary voters head to the polls. Even so, his initial fundraising numbers suggest he will be able to compete with the leading Democratic candidates seeking to challenge Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew. Mullock’s campaign says its early support reflects frustration among South Jersey residents over rising living costs and a desire for new leadership in Washington. The mayor has centered his message on economic pressures facing local families, arguing that voters want representation focused on everyday concerns such as housing, groceries, and health care. Mullock entered the race with support from key Democratic county leaders. He has received endorsements from the chairs of the Camden and Cumberland Democratic organizations, both considered allies of influential South Jersey Democratic leader George Norcross. Norcross has not made a public statement about the race. On the Republican side, Van Drew holds nearly $1.2 million in campaign funds as he prepares to defend his seat in a district that traditionally leans Republican, making it a challenging battleground for Democrats.

Deed Discrepancies Spark Fears for Future of Cape May County’s Historic Black Community

Residents of Whitesboro, a historic Black community in Cape May County, say discrepancies between property deeds and municipal tax records are creating confusion and putting some homeowners at risk of losing their properties. Community leader Shirley Green, executive director of the Whitesboro Historical Foundation and Museum, discovered the issue while preparing legal documents for the museum and found that its recorded lot and block numbers did not match township records. Further review revealed similar inconsistencies affecting about 50 properties so far, including incorrect addresses, merged parcels, outdated street names and incomplete descriptions. Legal experts note that mismatches between deeds and tax maps can occur when records are updated separately by counties and municipalities, but such inconsistencies can lead to boundary disputes, tax misapplications, mortgage complications and even potential tax sales. Some residents worry that flawed documentation could prevent their children from inheriting property, while others are facing development pressures and land acquisition attempts amid ongoing construction in the area. Founded in 1901 as a safe haven for Black families seeking land ownership and self-governance, Whitesboro is one of several historic Black settlements in South Jersey. Residents say increasing development and gentrification threaten the town’s character and legacy. In response, Green is leading the Whitesboro Historic Preservation Project to correct property record issues, protect longtime homeowners and restore recognition of the community’s historical significance.

Cape May County Airport After FAA Rejects Housing Request

The Federal Aviation Administration has rejected Cape May County’s proposal to build housing on approximately 33 acres of airport property in Lower Township, citing a policy that prohibits residential use of airport land. The denial comes as the county seeks to end its long-standing lease with the Delaware River Bay Authority, a move that could require repayment of up to $30 million. County officials say they remain focused on addressing affordable housing needs, but the airport’s future and any potential redevelopment plans remain unclear.
