Cape May Convention Hall Offers $5 Winter Pickleball Sessions

Cape May Convention Hall is giving residents and visitors a chance to stay active this winter with affordable indoor pickleball sessions priced at just $5 per person. The popular beachfront venue, located at 714 Beach Avenue, has reopened its courts for open recreational play running Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through March 26. The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and courts cannot be reserved in advance, making it convenient for walk-up players. All skill levels are welcome, from beginners trying the sport for the first time to more experienced players looking to sharpen their game during the colder months. To ensure fair play and maximize court access, the sessions use an eight-player rotation system, allowing multiple participants to cycle into games throughout the day. For those who do not have their own equipment, paddles are available upon request, lowering the barrier for newcomers to participate. City officials note that the facility will close early at 2 p.m. on Feb. 19. Additional details about the program, including updates or schedule changes, can be found through Cape May’s official website or by contacting Convention Hall directly.

West Cape May Breaks Ground on First-Ever Habitat for Humanity Homes

West Cape May and Habitat for Humanity Cape May have officially launched construction plans for two new affordable housing units on Willow Avenue, marking the first Habitat homes to be built in the borough. The project began in 2023 after the borough identified two lots to help fulfill its state-mandated affordable housing obligations. After completing regulatory approvals, surveying, and permitting, construction is expected to begin in mid-April, with modular three-bedroom, two-bath homes installed once foundations are complete. The homes will be the 22nd and 23rd Habitat properties built in Cape May County and will carry 30-year deed restrictions to ensure long-term affordability. Qualified applicants must demonstrate financial need, the ability to pay a mortgage, and commit to 200 hours of volunteer “sweat equity.” Income limits for a family of four cap at $82,160, and buyers must meet lending requirements, including a minimum credit score of 620. The initiative comes as home prices in the greater Cape May area remain high, with average sale prices exceeding $1.5 million in 2025. Local officials and Habitat leaders say the project is designed to provide attainable housing for working families and essential members of the community who might otherwise be priced out of the market.

Severe Weather Slows Dredging Efforts Across Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland Counties

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported that ice buildup in local waterways halted work along portions of the Intracoastal Waterway and the Maurice River. Contractors had anticipated wrapping up the projects in February, but completion is now expected in early to mid-March. The dredging efforts began in January but were interrupted when a powerful winter storm brought heavy snowfall to New Jersey, followed by extended periods of bitter cold. Two of the delayed projects are located along New Jersey’s 117-mile Intracoastal Waterway in Atlantic and Cape May counties. Under a contract with Barnegat Bay Dredging Company, crews are removing sediment from an area west of Brigantine and transferring it to marshlands within the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. Farther south, the same contractor is deepening sections of the waterway west of Stone Harbor. That project is expected to continue into the spring and summer, when crews will move farther along the Cape May County coastline. The project involves removing approximately 80,000 cubic yards of sediment as part of a long-term plan to restore eroded marshlands at the Heislerville Wildlife Management Area, overseen by the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife. The wetlands in that area have suffered years of erosion due to repeated flooding. Restoration efforts are aimed at rebuilding critical habitat for migratory shorebirds, including red knots. The current work follows a similar project completed in 2023, when 60,000 cubic yards of sediment were placed in the same marsh system.
