Affordable Theater Returns: Gateway Playhouse Announces $15 Play Series

Gateway Playhouse in Somers Point is expanding its theatrical offerings with the launch of a new lineup of plays called the Community Spotlight Series, bringing three celebrated stage productions to audiences later this year. The series will feature Neil Simon’s “London Suite” on July 11–12, “The Vagina Monologues” by Eve Ensler on Aug. 22–23, and the beloved classic “Harvey” from Nov. 6–8. The new initiative complements the theater’s first all-musical MainStage Season, adding a slate of plays that emphasize intimate storytelling and character-driven performances. The productions will be led by artists who have longstanding ties to the Gateway Playhouse as performers, directors, and crew members. Director Ryan Daly, known locally for staging productions such as Much Ado About Nothing and The Man Who Came to Dinner, will helm “London Suite.” The comedic play follows four different couples who occupy the same hotel suite in London at separate times, weaving together humorous and heartfelt moments. Kim Tucker, who previously directed a series of one-act plays at the theater, will lead “The Vagina Monologues.” First introduced in 1996, the work is a series of powerful monologues exploring women’s experiences, identity, sexuality, and violence, inspired by interviews with hundreds of women. Actor Eric Williams will step into the director’s chair for the first time with “Harvey.” The classic story centers on the kindhearted Elwood P. Dowd, whose closest companion is an imaginary six-foot-tall rabbit named Harvey. The Community Spotlight Series was created to highlight storytelling and bring artists together to produce meaningful works while making use of the theater’s available space and schedule. The productions are designed to focus on the emotional depth and simplicity of live theater, contrasting with the large-scale musical productions the Gateway is known for, which typically feature elaborate sets, costumes, and a live orchestra. Gateway Playhouse aims to keep the performances accessible to the community by offering $15 tickets for all shows. The theater’s leadership hopes the new series will encourage audiences to engage with stories that explore shared human experiences and spark conversation. Performance Schedule

  • London Suite: 7 p.m. July 11–12 and 1 p.m. July 12

  • The Vagina Monologues: 7 p.m. Aug. 22–23 and 1 p.m. Aug. 23

  • Harvey: 7 p.m. Nov. 6–7 and 2 p.m. Nov. 8

Tickets are available at GatewayByTheBay.org or through the Karen S. Sutherland Box Office. Gateway Playhouse is located at 738 Bay Ave., Somers Point. Additional information and reservations are available online or by calling 609-653-0553.

Miss New Jersey Pageant Returns to Ocean City With ‘Show Us Your Shoes’ Parade

Ocean City will once again host the Miss New Jersey Pageant this summer, bringing the statewide competition back to the Ocean City Music Pier along with a crowd-favorite tradition — the “Show Us Your Shoes” Parade. For decades, nearby Atlantic City was synonymous with the Miss America Pageant, which attracted national attention and featured a lively parade along the boardwalk. During the parade, contestants from across the country rode in vehicles while spectators cheered for them to show off their shoes. Over time, the tradition evolved into contestants wearing elaborate costumes and decorating their footwear to match. While the Miss America Pageant left Atlantic City in 2005 after nearly a century, the Miss New Jersey Pageant maintained its own strong ties to the Jersey Shore. Ocean City hosted the statewide competition for years before it later moved to Atlantic City. Now, the event is returning to Ocean City once again. This year’s Miss New Jersey Pageant will take place at the Ocean City Music Pier, with preliminary competitions scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, June 18 and 19. The finals will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 20. The Miss New Jersey’s Teen Competition is also part of the weekend schedule and will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday. Kicking off the festivities will be the “Show Us Your Shoes” Parade, set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 17. Contestants will travel along the route in convertibles while wearing themed costumes and showcasing creatively designed shoes. The current titleholder, Miss New Jersey Belle Nicholas, has already made appearances in Ocean City. Earlier this year, she joined the city’s local pageant winners — Little Miss Ocean City Harper Juelg, Junior Miss Ocean City Arianna DiAntonio, and Miss Ocean City Antonella DiAntonio — for the city’s traditional New Year’s Day ocean dip. The pageant’s return highlights the region’s strong connection to the Miss New Jersey program. Over the years, Atlantic and Cape May counties have produced numerous winners and host several preliminary competitions throughout the year. These include Miss Cape May County, Miss Ocean View, Miss Avalon, Miss Seashore Line, Miss Stars and Stripes, Miss Southern Maritime, Miss Island Resort, Miss Coastal Shore, and Miss Atlantic Shores. Some of these events are reserved for local contestants, while others welcome participants from across New Jersey. With the pageant and parade returning, Ocean City is preparing for a week of pageantry, community celebration, and a revival of one of the Miss America tradition’s most recognizable spectacles.
