Cape May Named Among New Jersey’s Friendliest Towns

Travel website World Atlas strikes again calling Cape May one of New Jersey’s most welcoming small towns, offering a blend of historic charm, coastal scenery, and a strong sense of community. Situated at the southern tip of the state, it has grown from a modest seaside retreat into a well-known destination that attracts visitors year-round. Its pedestrian-friendly design, especially around the Washington Street Mall, creates an inviting environment filled with local shops, restaurants, and gathering spaces that encourage a relaxed, neighborly feel. The town’s beaches are a central part of its identity, drawing both locals and tourists for recreation and connection. Popular spots like Sunset Beach, The Cove, and Broadway Beach each offer unique features, from scenic sunsets and wildlife viewing to calm waters and wide sandy stretches. These coastal areas help define Cape May as both a peaceful escape and an active community hub. Cape May’s calendar of events keeps the town lively in every season. Summer brings festivals, farmers markets, and outdoor entertainment, while fall introduces food-centered celebrations and parades. Winter continues the momentum with holiday-themed events, ensuring the town remains vibrant even during the off-season. Signature gatherings like the Exit Zero Jazz Festival highlight Cape May’s cultural appeal and draw large crowds. Dining and nightlife further contribute to the experience, with a mix of long-established seafood spots, farm-to-table restaurants, and scenic bars offering waterfront and rooftop views. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of indoor attractions, including museums, the historic lighthouse, and relaxing venues like spas and libraries, making Cape May an appealing destination regardless of weather. Overall, Cape May’s combination of natural beauty, engaging events, and a welcoming atmosphere continues to make it a standout destination, appealing to visitors seeking both relaxation and a strong sense of community.
Local Couple Bringing Surfside Grill and Fresh Energy to Cape May Beachfront

Cape May’s nearly two-mile-long promenade, a staple attraction along Beach Avenue, will see a new addition ahead of the 2026 summer season with the opening of Surfside Grill. The restaurant will be located between the Cape May Family-Fun Arcade and The Fudge Kitchen, in a space that previously housed a taqueria. Owned and operated by a local couple with ties to the Cape May community, Surfside Grill aims to bring back traditional boardwalk favorites such as burgers, cheesesteaks, and funnel cake. The new business is part of a broader wave of updates in the area, including recent changes to ownership at the nearby arcade. With preparations already underway, the restaurant is expected to open in early spring, positioning itself to serve both offseason visitors and the busy summer crowds. The addition reflects continued investment in the promenade, enhancing its mix of attractions, dining, and family-friendly experiences.
Cape May Coast Guard Festival Canceled Amid Shutdown and Security Concerns

Cape May residents and visitors should plan for temporary changes along the beachfront as a portion of the Promenade closes for preservation work. The walkway between Convention Hall and Madison Avenue planned to be shut down staring yesterday March 25, until April 1, with no public access permitted during that time. The closure is part of a broader, ongoing effort to maintain and improve infrastructure throughout the city. Promenade preservation is one of several major projects currently underway, backed by a multi-million-dollar state grant. Work along Beach Avenue is expected to continue through May 2026, with intermittent parking impacts in the surrounding area. Citywide, multiple construction initiatives are in progress or preparing to begin. Among them is the rehabilitation of Harborview Park, scheduled to start in early 2026, and continued upgrades at Lafayette Street Park, including new recreational features and open space improvements. Utility upgrades are also moving forward, with road, sewer, and water system improvements affecting several streets. Additional projects include a large-scale sidewalk rehabilitation program, construction of a new police station slated for completion in 2027, and renovations to the lifeguard headquarters expected to wrap up in 2026. Improvements to public facilities such as the tennis club are also in development. Looking ahead, Cape May is planning several long-term projects focused on flood resilience and infrastructure, including a seawall extension, a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge, and a major water treatment plant upgrade. Together, these efforts reflect a broad investment in the city’s public spaces, safety, and environmental resilience. More detailed information, and updates can be found on the city’s webpage.
